There are a lot of guys here that I have never heard of. Will make it a point to check them out. Surprised no one mentioned Mike Stern.

Stern's definitely the Man; I hadn't originally included guys like that because he burst on the scene playing with Billy Cobham and Miles Davis around '79 -80, and I was trying to get a feel for some of the more recent guitarists...but I guess the lists got expanded, lol (with guys like Randy Rhoads and The Edge poppin' up)... But Yeah, He and John Scofield are THE smokin axe players.....

I didn't bring up any of the standard bearers because of that very reason.

But since the circle has been broken, two of my favorite Mike Stern discs...

...Standards (and Other Songs)

...Play (features duets with John Scofield & Bill Frisell)

lol Yup, might as well kick the wall down now, lol

But I agree, and I also love his debut, particularly the Mood Swings cut, with Jaco...

The guitarist from "Go West "
his name escapes me

Alan Murphy(R.I.P.), who was also a member of the group Level 42 from 1987-until his untimely death in '89...

He had also made an album of instrumental jazz fusion with the group SFX in '84:

Yeah, he was a bad! I remember hearing a Go West tune on the radio called "From Baltimore To Paris", and thinking,Man, who's on guitar? - it's kind of a ballad, so he wasn't playing a million notes, but at the same time, he was very fluid, like Allan Holdsworth-- (interesting that they both ended up in Level 42, if only for a short time....)

Yup...well, not at the same time: Alan Murphy joined in '87, replacing the departing Boon Gould, but after Murphy died in '89 , Allan Holdsworth stepped in for a while and began touring with them, and recorded on part of their '91 album, "Guaranteed". After Holdsworth, guitarist Jakko Jaksyzk joined the band until they disbanded in '93. The revamped Level 42 has Nathan King (Mark King's brother) in the guitar seat...

I know I'm a little late on this but I had to add someone else..Charlie Singleton from CAMEO. He's another one of my faves and his work on "Candy" and "Back And Forth" is killer. He's another one (like Blackbird) who fused fusion and funk-rock together real well.

Lots of love for virtuosos here, but how about folks who get by on expression!

Marc Ribot (as someone said)
Stephen Malkmus (from Pavement)
Carrie Brownstein (Sleater Kinney)
Ani DiFranco
The guy from Dinosaur Jr. (forget his name)
Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley)
Cody Chestnut
Thurston Mooore
Built to Spill's guitarist
Luna's guitarist
Both guys from Drive-By Truckers

u know what, it's probably not as sorry as Sugarfoot's solo album. Man, look, the Ohio Players are one of my all -time favorite bands and I love Sugarfoot to death. BUT, man, that solo album is SOOORRRYYY! Roger is even on there and STILL that couldn't save that shit.

SUGARFOOT HAD A SOLO RECORD??!!?? Damn, how did I miss that? I love the Players too. Roger was on it too? Much respect to Roger and may he R.I.P, but that doesn't sound like a good combination (lol). I remember Sugar and Eddie Hazel were gonna tour together as "The New Funkadelics" back in early 92 but I don't think it happened.

Sugar and Hazel? Yeah, that would have been killin'. Yeah, on Sugar's lp, he re-did "Fire". That shit was weak, though.
