i could name a bunch of people i liked, but most of them were fairly obscure and wouldn't be choices for 'icon' status.

Same here. I like Martha Wash, M People, Robin S., Ce Ce Penniston, Crystal Waters, LaBouche, RuPaul, etc. but none of those would be considered icons.

Remember: Solo Artists Only!!! It's real easy because it's the 1990's.

If Michael, Prince, & Madonna are the BIG 3 of the 1980's, then who are the BIG 3 of the 1990's?

All opinions & facts are welcome. Play nice. And no name-calling!!! lol

BTW, my answers:

Mariah Carey
Shania Twain
2pac

I have other options beside those three:

Janet Jackson
Dr. Dre
Celine Dion
R. Kelly
Trent Renzor

Damn. I forgot one:

Kylie Minogue!!! She outsold Madonna in most of the nations outside of America.

Garth Brooks

Whitney Houston

ya know....Whitney really could have been one of the top three, but she spent most of the 90s contributing to movie soundtracks ('The Bodyguard'...'Waiting To Exhale'...'The Preacher's Wife'),instead of releasing full-length albums. Thus, her 90s output was inconsistent and infrequent.I think she made more of an impact in the 80s.

Dr Dre

is an obvious candidate both in terms of commercial success and musical appeal (whether you like him or not the guy is basically the musical icom of west coast rap which in turn whether you like will find its place in popular music history)
I agree with you except for the West Coast part. Dr. Dre has produced many rappers a nd singers all over ! He is respected by almost all of the hip hop community minus Suge Knight.
i WENT FROM ASHY TO CLASSY! wink

Eddie Vedder.

You can't talk about the '90s and not mention him or the Seattle Grunge scene. That was EVERYWHERE in the early '90s.

I'm not a fan of Pearl Jam. But even I agree with you that Eddie Vedder did more for Seattle Grunge Rock than ANYONE from Seattle.

He's a good choice for a 90's Icon.
thumbs up!

Even if I agreed with you both that he'd belong on the short list, we're talking solo artists here.

madonna - agree with that she was still a huge force in the 90's
michael jackson - face it he was just as famous in the 90's as he was in the 70's and 80's (for good or for worse) and 'history' and 'dangrous' sold just as much as 'off the wall' and 'bad'
kurt cobain - yes he was in a group, but i think of him as an individual icon as well as an icon with nirvana

Don't worry, Ice Cube & Scarface has already call 50 Cent out for his reckless behavior.

What did they say? Finally, the adults join the conversation.

50 will never battle/diss rap artists that can beat him. But he will battle/diss rappers that he can beat (Ja Rule) or he THINK he can beat (Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Nas).

The former is a cupcake. The latter three would eat him for lunch on the mic.

2pac was way different from 50 Cent. When 'Pac wanted to battle/diss, at least he call out THE best from his generation (Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, etc.)

Plus, 'Pac has more balance as a songwriter by writing rap songs about different issues (2Pacalypse Now, Strictly For My Niggaz, & Me Against The World are the albums that proves this point).
This is the real 2pac that I miss listening to.
