Remember: Solo Artists Only!!! It's real easy because it's the 1990's.

If Michael, Prince, & Madonna are the BIG 3 of the 1980's, then who are the BIG 3 of the 1990's?

All opinions & facts are welcome. Play nice. And no name-calling!!! lol

BTW, my answers:

Mariah Carey
Shania Twain
2pac

[Edited 5/17/05 22:44pm]

I have other options beside those three:

Janet Jackson
Dr. Dre
Celine Dion
R. Kelly
Trent Renzor

Ok, that pretty much shows you why the 90's SUCK lol

2pac DID NOT suck (IMHO)!!! BTW, I think it was Biggie Smalls that was a little overrated, not 2pac.

2pac was one of the Top 10 best rap artists ever (at least on my list as well as the list of most Hip-Hop magazine voting polls).

Celine Dion is a good choice for a 90's icon (if you like too much pop!!). For better or worse, Celine sold a lot of record.

Garth Brooks & Shania Twain are THE most sucessful artists in country music history. And yes, they both sold out on the country music community when they went pop (just like Prince selling out on the funk community for a little while to make more more during the 80's).

Mary J. Blige? Well, I like Mary for most her first 2 albums (What's the 411? & My Life). Yes, she is the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. But she was never a great vocalist on Hip-Hop/R&B or Top 40 radio.

Compare these options to our 70's choices, and yes, the 90's SUCK. biggrin

The 90s belongs to a whole load of people, and if you look at sales, it's usually Garth Brooks or Shania Twain killin' it.

Exactly!!!

Stania Twain's third album, Come On Over, was the Michael Jackson's Thriller of the 1990's!!!

But don't overlook Mariah Carey. Overall, she was the best-selling female artist of the 1990's. In fact, all of Mariah's most successful albums were release in the 90's.

Didn't you know that the 90's sampled the 70's? lol

That's a lot of George Clinton, Sly Stone, Prince, & The Isley Brothers samples that were use at the time (especially in Hip-Hop/R&B).

And don't forget about the revenge of the rap & rock communities (read: Kid Rock).

I disagree. B.I.G. was an elite MC. Tupac was extremely gifted but to me his work was uneven. He didn't know whether he wanted to be a prophet or a thug. He was the Anakin Skywalker of the rap game.

I think Tupac's untimely death has more to do with his status than Biggie's death does for his.

Biggie is on my top 10 list of best rap artists ever as well. But rank higher that 2pac? Hell no!!!!

2pac was a better songwriter than Biggie. There are too many 2pac bootleg albums/EPs to put this point!!!

But I will agree with you that 2pac was the Anakin Skywalker of Hip-Hop.

Suge Knight help 2pac become Darth Vader at Death Row Records. But that's another story!

But I still believe that 2pac was a icon of the 1990's (and maybe in Hip-Hop History itself) because a lot of rap artists today (read: 50 Cent) wants to have THE same kind of love & respect that the fans once gave 2pac in his career.

Mariah only made 2 as well. Rainbow, the debut, Emotions, Music Box, Merry Christmas and Daydream are all interchangeable, so they count as one. Butterfly counts as the second wink

Reasonable minds can agree and disagree on Biggie v. 'Pac. But I agree with just about everything else here. More MCs today would love to emulate him, including 50, Ja Rule, DMX, et al. If 50 doesn't quit this foolishness of tempting history to repeat itself, then he'll follow 'Pac.

See what I mean, TVD?

I agree with you about Biggie, but I would argue that Tupac is as big if not bigger than Kurt Cobain in death.

Janet Jackson would get my vote over Mariah or Whitney because she's almost the prototype for solo female artists these days, be it Britney, Xtina, Beyonce, Ciara, whoever you wanna name. They're all Janet clones to one degree or another.

I'd hoped Tupac would stay on the "souljah"/prophet tip as he was in 2Pacalypse Now, rather than go off on the thug life angle that, IMHO, killed him.

I should look 4 her second album "emotions". But the title song is kinda shit though. Her first album had only 2 songs i really liked. "theres got to be a way" and "all in ur mind", other then that, it was mainly filler. But for a debut it was pretty good.

Most debuts are average I find. And mariahs first plays it too safe so most of the tracks just end up not being anything out of the ordinary. But its all inoffensive and could of been worse.

"theres got to be a way"? I swear I saw a video to that song on some mariah day vh1 england had? That song should suck, but I like the sentiment.

Daydream was the first sign that Mariah was accepting Hip-Hop elements in her songs. Therefore, I don't think THAT album is so interchangeable like Mariah Carey, Emotions, Unplugged, or Music Box.

Butterfly was Mariah's best career album (Screw Music Box!!!lol ). The very first time that I listen to the title track, I damn nearly felt the sadness that Mariah was showing. BTW, Honey was Mariah's best Hip-Hop track. And her cover of Prince's The Beautiful Ones was interesting to say the least. IMHO of course!

Rainbow works like a sequel to Butterfly. On its own, it is a mix bag. But I like this album way better than anything Mariah has done after leaving Sony Music Entertainment.

With Janet (along with Madonna), she should be an icon of the 80's & 90's.

As I think about it, Janet is the bridge between all of the icons of the 80's & 90's!!!eek

Don't worry, Ice Cube & Scarface has already call 50 Cent out for his reckless behavior.

50 will never battle/diss rap artists that can beat him. But he will battle/diss rappers that he can beat (Ja Rule) or he THINK he can beat (Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Nas).

2pac was way different from 50 Cent. When 'Pac wanted to battle/diss, at least he call out THE best from his generation (Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, etc.)

Plus, 'Pac has more balance as a songwriter by writing rap songs about different issues (2Pacalypse Now, Strictly For My Niggaz, & Me Against The World are the albums that proves this point).
This is the real 2pac that I miss listening to.
