So Larry G. has effectively killed TWO brilliant careers:
1. Sly Stone 2. Prince Quite a list huh...

I've never been to one that he was involved in. What type of shenanigans are you referring to? I don't get that either . I've been to about 15 Prince concerts since '82 , and For me, the best one was a small "Hit and Run" type show he did with Larry Graham at the Capital Ballroom in DC back in '98...it was stripped down, and everything was an extended jam, in fact , at the beginning, Prince and Larry Graham both came on playing the Bass--and Rhonda was already on stage, so you had a triple bass throwdown--but they didn't get in each other's way, they were lisening to each other, and played so that each bassline actually complimented the other--and Lawd it was Funky!! The whole show was very relaxed and loose, Prince was very talkative throughout, and you could tell he was having a great time. The concerts before and since then have been great, but it was a treat hearing him just stretch out have fun and jam with one of his musical heroes for a few hours... ... But FYI: Larry has been doing quite well before he hooked up with Prince. In 1994 he reunited his group Graham Central Station and played sold out performances all over the world. Over the long run, I actually believe that his association with Prince hurt him more than it benefited him. I never even heard of the fuck until Prince pimped his out all over the tours. It's kinda hard to believe that you've never heard of Sly & the Family Stone before, one of the most influental groups of all times and one of the first integrated funk groups in music history. Larry's and Sly's influence has always been very obvious in Prince's sound. So it's nothing new. You may never have heard of the "fuck", but that might be because you don't really care for funk music too much. But if you gave Sly a try, I'm sure you'd love them and you'd gain more respect for Larry. If you like Prince, especially his older music, you will surely appreciate Sly. [Edited 5/21/05 10:53am]

I have seen Prince everytime is come to the D.C area except for the Capital Ballroom performance. Larry was only at two of those shows that I saw and none of the shenanigans you menitoned took place. I think the shenanigans have not happen as much as you think they have and let's be honest it is show business everybody has their routine. It is a part of putting on a show.

Besides, I'd never wanna kill Larry .. he's one of the greatest funk bass players of all times, a true legend. Just my two cents. I'm no Larry fan or hater. However it seems Prince wanted/needed to be influenced by him for SOME reason.
Who's to say what might have become of Prince if not for his friendship with Larry. Would the Larry doubters feel better if Prince "lost it" giving in to his temptations while keeping an acceptable (to fans) distance from Larry ? Anyone who says yes obviously doesn't care about Prince, the person.

If Prince put on 50lbs, would he not get the same treatment that D'Angelo is getting. If he were knocking on doors asking for a place to stay or for food to eat, how many people would let him in/feed him? The person (not the persona). Probably not many. Larry probably would however. That is totally acceptable. But just because it's not your kind of music, please don't put down Larry's impact on music in general. He may be no Bootsy by fame, but he has accomplished far more in style and influence than Bootsy. Even Bootsy got his playing style from Larry Graham (and Sweet Charles Sherrell). You may not like Larry, because he hangs with Prince. That's cool. But it's undeniable that Larry at a huge impact on popular music culture .. and especially on Prince, when he was little. Now that he is a grown man and finally a matured musician, it's only logical that he likes to hang out and play with the idols of his youth - Larry and Maceo. I can assure you that it wasn't Larry who "brainwashed" Prince. Larry simply helped Prince to find the path he was looking for. But Prince had to walk that path by himself. He is a grown man who makes his own decisions, whether you like them or not. And if his choice of religion helps the man to find peace and security, what's wrong with it?

If he does or not, I don't know. All I know is that many of his fans don't respect the path he has chosen for himself. nothing if he doesent allow it to restrict his creativity I don't see his creativity restricted. If you think so, then it's a very subjective observation. Apart from much on his last record, I believe that Prince has never been in a better artistic shape then today. After many years of soul searching, he has finally found his true self and the music he wants to play. I found the music he has created on the way to be interesting and inspiring, but not as mature and defined as today. But then again, this is only my personal opinion.
