Do you ever pray for anyone who isn't famous and is suffering from breast cancer?

Thought not!

Nova ~ it may be true that people with money have access to more advanced treatment, but many, many wealthy people die from it ~ I am thinking of Gildna Radner and Micheal Landon at the moment. It is a horrible disease that doesn't discriminate. A close friend of mine is struggling with it now and the prognosis is not good. Prayers and love to all of you who are helping loved ones fight this or have lost someone to cancer.

I was just thinking about my aunt. sad

They took her to an operation in order to remove a tumor, cut her open and sew her back together again. Six months on from the operation at the medical check they found out that everything else had gone just fine - they had just forgot to remove the tumor itself!

"Best public health care system in the world" my ass.

Stop putting words in my mouth. That's rude. And you don't know me very well to make such a stupid ass statement like that!!! So check yourself!!!

And BTW, yes I pray for the sick to get well. Famous or otherwise.

And you're damn right, I'm a good fan of Kylie's music. What's it to you?

I pray for her. Wow, how tragic. This is a horrible day./genericcomments

She's just another person, so I won't pretend I'll pray or cry for her. But it's unfortunate as always.

Yep!
Cancer is like 2 different diseases depending on when it's detected. When it's caught early (especially in breast/prostate)cure rate is very high. She did. She'll be fine...The next high profile cancer survivor.

Kylie Minogue's Web site overwhelmed after cancer news
Associated Press

MELBOURNE, Australia — Kylie Minogue's Web site was operating on "reduced service" Wednesday because of the large number of visitors checking for updates since the singer revealed she has breast cancer.

"Due to the overwhelming response to yesterday's news and the vast numbers of visitors to the site, Kylie.com is operating a reduced service to cope with the increased traffic," said a message on the Web site.

"You will be able to keep up-to-date with the latest official news as it is announced on this home page and we hope to have the full site up and running again very shortly."

Australia's prime minister and scores of fans delivered their best wishes to Minogue Wednesday as the 36-year-old Australian pop star prepared to undergo treatment.

"Any young woman of that age to be diagnosed with that condition — it does send a shudder through you," Prime Minister John Howard told Southern Cross radio.

"I think all Australians feel for her and wish her well and hope that it has been detected in the very early stages and she will make a full recovery," he added.

Minogue, who has postponed her upcoming tour of Australia, said in a statement Tuesday that she was "sorry to have to disappoint my fans."

"Nevertheless hopefully all will work out fine and I'll be back with you all again soon," the statement said.

Reporters camped outside the Minogue family home in a wealthy suburb of the southern city of Melbourne as friends and fans delivered messages and flowers.

Madonna responds to Kylie

" I was saddened to learn about Kylie Minogue's breast cancer diagnosis.
I'm so grateful that they found it early.
(Yet another reminder for all women to have annual mammograms.)
Aside from being tremendously talented,
Kylie's a fighter and I know this is a battle she will win.
Let's all pray for her speedy recovery and send all of our best wishes her way.
With love and light to you Kylie...Madonna "

There are many other factors that contribute to recovering from breast cancer other than "catching it early." When surgeons remove the tumor, they check for "clean margins" meaning how does the tissue surrounding the tumor look. They will test it to see if it is estrogen positive. If it is, doctors suggest taking drugs like tamoxifen (which is actually on the US government's list of know carcinogens!) It supposedly reduces the risk for recurring breast cancer when it is estrogen postive, but can cause other cancers. They will also check for a protein called HER2, which cause cancer cells to grow at a faster rate than normal cancer cells. 1/5 of all breast cancer patients have the HER2 protein.

My breast cancer was detected a month before my 31st birthday. Stage II. But I did test positive for HER2, making my treatment even trickier. Mastectomy, 10 months of chemo, 7 weeks of radiation, and a year of Herceptin, a drug that destroys HER2 proteins.

And, I have to say this...a celebrity can have all the money in the world, and be diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, the money won't save them if they don't choose the right treatments.

2 comments come to mind:

1) That's too bad. Thoughts and prayers to her. Tessa's and my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago, and I know what a difficult ordeal it can be. Hope it turns out as good for her as it did for our mother. pray

2) Janet must be kicking herself, thinking "That Kylie Minogue is a genius!! Why haven't I ever thought of cancer when I'm cancelling shows?!" biggrin
