I just bought the CD digipack version. It's supposed to be remastered but it doesn't sound any different to the previous release. It's a brilliant record though and for once a "classic" album that earns it's reputation.

It has earned its repuatation over the years.

They've changed it in the U.S. it now comes with the concert photo that was featured in the inside jacket fold in the LP.

The original artwork is still on the pressings sold outside of the U.S.

Didn't the original LP jacket fold have a collage of photos that had pictures of Sly and his family and friends?

Yes. The reason for them deleting the o.g cover is because Sly had a picture of the flag altered from blue to black (representing a black take over in the country) and had dirt placed on the white stripes. Many felt it offensive, so Epic, already not at peace with the material Sly turned in, yanked it and put a concert photo on the cover instead.

Just curious, does the original cover bother/offend anyone?

It doesn't bother me. It's one of my favorite covers.

I'm sure you have to think about the timing of Sly's commercial peak, patriotism and the Vietnam war. With Sly following up the success of the Woodstock performance and the singles from the Greatest Hits package, an album cover featuring an American flag that's black, red and filled with bullet holes as stars.... that's a pretty damn bold statement to make. I'm pretty sure Sly was the largest act at Epic from 1969-1971, and they were probably shitting bricks with that one.

Even today look at MeShell Ndegeocello's album Dance of the Infidel. They are changing the cover in the U.S. because of the Arabic writing on the original cover.

Exactly!

Not at all. When I was little, my older cousin had this album. I just thought it was a pic of the flag. I didn't pay attention to anything about it. When I finally got the album myself when I was around 13, it had the concert shot on the cover. Then maybe 5 or 6 years later, I saw a used album with the flag on the cover and wondered why it had two different covers. Anyway, later, I read about the controversy in an article and noticed the flag on the cover with the bullet holes, black where the blue should be, the dirt on the stripes and so forth. Sly was making a statement just with this picture.

nod And a very powerful statement at that. One of the best album covers I've seen and the most powerful one I have. Sly was so far ahead of his time because something as simple as that rendering of the flag provoked so many emotions.

You know, I don't even think it was the album cover that offended a lot of people. It was the music because it just wasn't mainstream anymore. It was just bleak, paranoid, and depressing music to a lot of people back in 1971 and even today, in 2005, it's considered to be that. But, no the album cover never offended me in any way because it was in one word: "TRUE".

Everyone loved the very happy Sly Stone.

But the Angry, Bitter, Depressing Sly Stone?

FACTS: the maistream pop culture was not really for THE real Sly Stone at all!!!

thumbs up! You nailed it....they didn't want to hear what was on Sly's mind and the sober reality that America was waking up to.

If You Want Me to Stay
(S. Stewart)

If you want me to stay
I'll be around today
To be available for you to see
I'm about to go there
Then you'll know
For me to stay here
I've got to be me
You'll never be in doubt
That's what it's all about
You can't take me for granted and smile
Count the days I'm gone
Forget reachin' me by phone
Cause I promise
I'll be gone for a while
And when you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person
That you really are now
You got to get it straight
How could I ever be late
When you're my woman
Taking up my time
Oh how could I ever allow
I guess I wonder how
I could get out a pocket for fun
When you know that
You're never number two
Number one's gonna be number one

I'll be good
I wish I could
Get this message over to you now

When you see me again
I hope that you have been
The kind of person
That you really are now
I'll be so good
I wish I could
Get this message over to you now
