Cyndi freakin' Lauper.
And I can't believe someone said "Ten." That's Pearl Jam's worst, in my book. They were closer to a, um, jam band, at that point.

I thought the question was whether the artist bettered their first album, and in my opinion Jimi Hendrix did not, his first album is one of the best ever. I've written on his album progression in serious detail here: http://www.prince.org/msg/8/132518 The Readers Digest version is that Are You Experience? laid down the law for the sound of the Psychedelic period, not to mention re-writing the vocabulary for the electric guitar. Axis:Bold As Love showed his progression as a songwriter (Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Bold As Love, etc.). Electric Ladyland said here's how to create sonic landscapes using the recording studio as an additional musical instrument. IMO, the chronological improvement is much too evident. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Some 'new' choices:
- Jill Jones - Jill Jones - Urban Dance squad - Mental Floss for the globe - Tool - Undertow (not counting their EP 'Opiate, from there one they got too 'Progrock and' too purposely intellectual for me: Undertow is raw, more basic, and delivers 'songs' instead of 'pieces') - REM - Murmur (as a big REM-fan i am doubting on this, because Automatic for the People especially is a really strong set of songs, lyrics and musicianship, but Murmur, while sometimes short of good compisitions, is showing such an original atmosphere and mysteriousness in its sound, that i am still doubting)

The Specials The English Beat The B-52's The Selecter yep whoa ...how can I forget Madness-One Step Beyond. Seems as if a lot of ska bands first albums are my favorite ones and best ones. Same with No Doubt....I love their first album. Many fans would disagree with me though. Musically, they're more advanced now, and that makes sense, but I just couldn't get into their new sound. Bring back the quirky ska. add-on. [Edited 5/14/05 16:56pm] looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

i LOVE LOVE LOVED this album. After it, it seemed all she did was complain about how people were "Biting her style" and "this one's for the clubs" well shit, what about the people that don't go to the clubs? Who's gonna stop 200 Balloons?

now beat that..... You mean album, er, tape, er, CD? I can't think of many brilliant debuts...even Ps. TTD is a good candidate. My faves by the Pretenders are not even on that debut (besides Brass in Pocket...nice bass). My City Was Gone's bass was fonky! OK, need to admit I didn't listen to whole album (though someone I knew had it), Rockwell (aka Berry Gordy III or IV or ...) I'm sorry, but I like Pretenders II much better. Savage Garden. The first album was unbelievable, brilliant and really intense. The second album had couple of good songs and more of a commercial pop feeling, and then Darren Hayes did the stupidest thing and left the duo. He went on to release a pure pop album with the eardrum-braking whiny "ballad" Insatiable, which makes me sad for the long gone glory everythime I hear thet piece of crap.
