This book reflects US Sales Only... That being said, Saturday Night Fever, released in 11/77, is listed at Number 5 with 15 Million Sold. More from the book: "The Bee Gees' soundtrack to the '77 movie, contains seven tracks that went to become NUMBER ONE SINGLES, more than any other record among the 100 best selling albums." |

I think it's still in second place. It should be, anyway. While it's up there in sales, the actual competition to Thriller has been the Eagles Greatest Hits Vol.1... over the years, through continuous purchases, Thriller and Eagles' GHV1, has been neck and neck in US Sales... at one point, it surpassed Thriller, only to be taken back again by MJ with the re-releases of the solo albums' "digital remasterings"... It's true! |

"icon" connotes a certain type of superstar, so while there are many others, ranging from Donna Summer to Springsteen, i'd have to say the top 3 ICONS of the 70's would be Bowie, Elton and Stevie. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

At a personal level, I remember in the 80's my mom concluding that music then sucked compared to the 60s with the Beatles, Hendrix and the Stones. In the 70's my grandmother said the same thing about music then. Now the 70's is some kinda "golden era" of music. 20 years later its the same argument. And guess what they'll be saying 20 years from now? OK, you want to compare... Tell me who's the Biggest rock band of Today ??? Tell me who's the biggest solo artist of today ??? How many CLASSIC albums were released since 2000, that truly shocked the world ???? Artists who dominate the music industry today SUCK compare to the greatest artists of yesterday... The 60's and 70's were the best decades in Music, since then, Music slowly started to suck, more and more.... This is a FACT... Everybody know that.... [Edited 5/13/05 12:08pm] I remember blasting Public Enemy's "Rebel Without A Pause" in '87 and my mom telling me to turn that "noise" down...I think you need to understand that everyone protects and thinks highly of their "own" era....I think the era between 88-94 was the best in terms of hip-hop....but that's just me...All this to say that while I can say that MY era is better than what's going on today, I know to keep my old ass mouth shut [LOL] and let the kids have their fun...This is their era, plain and simple...As for my 70's list: Stevie Elton John The Bee Gees (Never mind the critical disdain, those cats were huge...and this is coming from someone that knows Bowie belongs on this list....) And while I'm at it--- 60's-- The Beatles Diana Ross [representing Motown...Smokey Robinson was more of an artist than an ICON; Marvin didn't hit his peak until the '70s) Jimi Hendrix 80's Michael Jackson Madonna RUN DMC Why no Prince? Easy. Because we are talking about ICONS...If the topic was greatest ARTISTS Of All Time, Prince easily dominates the '80s.... '90s Nirvana Tupac Mariah Carey [Edited 5/19/05 22:13pm]

You're not alone. I posted on dozens of threads saying the exact same thing. To summarize: 1. 2 songs in the last 20 years changed the face of popular music: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Rebel Without A Pause," They were revolutionary. 2. '88-'94 is the golden era of hip-hop and 1994 was the greatest year in hip-hop history. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

paligap said: krayzie said: This thread is a mess.. You can't name only three Icons in the 70's... There were too many, man... Too many great artists Too many great bands Too many great singers... And all these singers/bands were releasing a new album EACH year.... Today, Music sucks when you compare to the 70's.... I agree. I Might be able to give you a Top 10 of the 70's, and Stevie was definititely one of the giants, but beyond that, it depends on what you were listening to... there was so much going on musically in that decade... You could probably make a case for all of the above ( for example, I'm not a big Donna Summer fan, but she was huge -- Disco was a HUGE part of the 70's, But So were Bowie, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Barry Gibb, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Neil Young, Freddie Mercury, Frank Zappa)... Another problem is that, unlike the 80's, where Individuals were so important to the Media, and Videos were so necessary, In the 70's, there was much more Emphasis on Groups -- Earth Wind And Fire, The Bee Gees, Kiss, Parliament-Funkadelic, Queen, The Eagles, Steely Dan , Jackson 5, Led Zeppelin, etc., -- so yeah, it all depends... ... [Edited 5/13/05 14:41pm] Have we forgeten about Al Green, Issac Hayes, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin? Chicago, The Isley Brothers and Fleetwood Mac were VERY important too. It's too hard to list icons from the 1970s because the competition was fierce and there were sooo many talented artists. [Edited 5/21/05 19:57pm]
