Of equal amazement is how Lenny Kravitz just blatantly lied about the origins of the track.

The video is a wonder, though.

The hotel that Madonna is in is the same hotel that Prince is in for the Sexy MF video. How many org.ers knew that one?

And That Says What!!!!

Truly... the drum track is a straight rip off of Public Enemy's "S1W" from "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" and the lyrics are reportedly taken from a poem by Ingrid Chavez, with whom Lenny was justifyin love.

Oh, I don't know. Some of us still think integrity in artists and music is still important. I guess I'm just funny that way.

And actually, I did enjoy it . . . the first time I heard it on PE's album.

"Justify My Love" is my favorite Madonna video.I remember in the winter of 1990,EVERYBODY was talking about this video. The fact that it was banned from MTV only made people more curious about it.I don't really think it's X-rated.It's actually a very funny video, kinda like Maddy's "Sex" book. She was breaking down taboos and questioning people's hang-ups about sex.

When you really think about it,Madonna probably has more outstanding videos than almost anyone else in pop music.Remember these awesome videos...

***"Like A Prayer"
***"Vogue"
***"Papa Don't Preach"
***"Music"
***"Ray of Light"
***"Human Nature"
***"Bad Girl"
***"Express Yourself"

and several others.....

In fairness to Lenny, this was back when sampling was taking off and nobody was getting credit for the samples being used including James Brown and George Clinton and many others.

I read an article about the Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique that said an album like that couldn't be made anymore due to all the clearances that are needed for samples now. There's so many uncredited samples on there it's crazy., but by the time the Dust Bros produced Beck's next album, they had to clear everything which limited their use of sampling. anyway, Lenny doesn't outright steal samples anymore, he just rerecords and changes a chord or 2.

I understand that. But that's not what happened in this case.

In an MTV interview Lenny was asked specifically how he came up with the track. He replied that it was something he had put together awhile back and just had lying around. That was totally untrue. Had he just said he sampled it from P.E. there probably wouldn't have been any hubbub back then. But he was being deceptive about it, for whatever reason.

I would give him the benefit of the doubt, but he just ripped the track (as opposed to sample it), and I'm sure Ingrid Chavez doesn't think he merely "sampled" her lyrics... Plus, by 1990, much of the sampling regulations and legal practices were already in place by record companies after the late 80s lawsuits by James Brown and the label owning Pfunk/George Clinton's stuff.

integrity is important.. but don't question every little thing an artist says. they give loads of interviews on a daily basis and CAN make mistakes in their speech. it's human. i'm speaking in general here, don't really now about the "lenny is lying" part. later.

Who's questioning every little thing? This was very specific. It's his song.

Are you telling me that when questioned about the origins of the rhythm track on probably the biggest hit of his career he makes the mistake of saying that it was something he put together and had lying around?

This is a songwriter we're talking about here.

There was no mistake. Lenny was being deceitful about the track. I'm not saying the guy should be crucified. But he did lie about it. There's no other way around it.

It would be like Vanilla Ice mistakenly saying he didn't pull the sample for 'Ice Ice Baby' from 'Under Pressure'. It's not possible not to know.

The whole MTV thing was a setup anyway. The interviewer asked the question knowing full well in advance where the sample came from. However, seeing as Lenny gave PE no credit on the track, the question was asked. And when Lenny gave the answer he did MTV called him on it. There's no way anybody's going to convince me that he didn't know he sampled Public Enemy in creating the song.

Video's wonderful, I must say...
And so is the song. I used to listen to it every single day on my walkman back to back with Ralph Tresvant's song 'Sensitivity', I was about 13...

This is definitely one of Madonna's best.

Funny how AFTER she did this "Ingrid Chavez" song, with Ingrid's heavy-breathed spoken-word style of singing, Madonna followed up with more songs in the same singing style which became her trademark for a while. Meanwhile, no one even paid attention to poor Ingrid's CD.

I was kinda dissapointed with the "What It Feels Like For A Girl" video.I think the song is one of her best and could have been a Number One hit if she had not spoiled it with that tacky video. At the very least, she should have made a second, more "viewer-friendly" video that could have been shown on MTV;)

That video is by far my favorite from "Music" because it is so edgy and risky. I really love that about her. I also thought that the song could have gone number 1, but Madonna obviously didn't care enough to make a new video, so why should I? My friends still love the song when I play it. smile What is your favorite of her videos? Mine would have to be "Oh Father."

It isn't that it's just the same beat... it's the exact same track, entitled "S1W" from "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," with certain production signatures from Hank Shocklee and the Bomb Squad.

SkletonKee,

NuPwrSoul is correct. The track was lifted in it's entirety by Lenny Kravitz for 'Justify My Love' save for a keyboard track and of course, 'Donna's vocals.

However, the drum track from 'S1W', I believe, was lifted from James Brown's 'Funky Drummer', which has been used by so many different artists it'd be impossible to keep track of them all.

Has anybody heard the Ingrid Chvez song? is it on her album?

or is it "like" one of her songs?

my opinion of the song, great music, sensual, the vocals are torchy...the lyrics are pretty elementary. so for madonna's sake lets hope she did swipe it from whatshername

Aaah "funky drummer" smile

wait, that was a drum machine? dang

sometimes ignorance is bliss...

so when james says (something like) what we gonna do is step back and let the drummer have some" hes just letting the machine play...man i hate hearing stuff like that. id like to think it was a real drummer

or was it that it was copied on a drum machine by so many people? why do i care?

I meant that Justify My Love's whispered, sensual style is in the "Ingrid Chavez" style. If U listen to "Elephant Box" you will see.

Further proof is in the beginning of Lovesexy, when Ingrid whispers to us,
"Rain is wet, sugar is sweet, clap your hands, and stomp your feet..."
That came out WAY before "Justify My Love", and it's in that same style.

LOL, Ingrid whispers to US? No man, she's whispering to ME! j/k

well i see where you're coming from, but its not like Ingrid invented breathy vocals, or bad poetry, perhaps she was the first to put it together...

And i dont find Ingrid sensual at all! i mean her vocals yes but her words are so obtuse...like dating a pretty hippie, you just wanna...ugh!
