Martha Reeves (The Vandellas) plans run for Detroit City Council Motown diva Martha Reeves, 63, is petitioning for a role on Detroit's City Council, with the school system at the top of her agenda for change.
The singer, who performed Dancing in the Street with the Vandellas, is currently seeking support for election. "I've always been a good team player and I figure I'll be an asset on our city council," Reeves told WDIV-TV. "I think that our city council could probably get along better if they had a little music," she added. Reeves said she was concerned with a number of problems facing the city including abandoned buildings and schools. Council meetings "I'd like to start with the schools and have them, you know, sort of scrutinised and have them get a better understanding of how to educate our children," she said. Referring to her most popular hit, she said she would head off arguments among fellow councillors: "I'll get them to dance in the streets". Reeves' other hits with the Vandellas were (Love is Like a) Heat Wave and Nowhere to Run. She continues to perform, taking part in tributes to Motown concerts worldwide. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/h...435773.stm | |
