Has MUSIC reached creative stand stil?

Or is it that no one's willing to take
any creative risks for fear of losing fans/money ?

NIN's new CD is excellent , but more of the same. A lot of artists are sticking to their formula or returning to their roots.

Now's the time for Prince to open the vault and let's hear something "out there". He's got plenty of weird stuff in there.

No. It hasn't. Stop waiting for the majors to hand you something new. Go look up bands and listen to new stuff. There's plenty of music out there that is creative, you just got to look for it.

no. there are plenty of great, creative, experimental performers out there. go to your local record store and ask people. tell them what you already like and that you're looking for some new shit. good indie record stores have employees who really know their stuff in music. look online for new bands, read some indie mags, pick up your local city free press and read about the bands coming to town. great bands are out there...

I agree too. I think what origmnd means is "mainstream" music, the stuff that we see on MTV/VH-1 and hear on the radio.

Indie artists are as good as they ever were!!

no,

but what we are in danger of loosing the art of songwriting i fear and musicianship if we continue to underfund our school music programs...

and whats disgusting is that there are studies that show children who learn how to play an instrument are less likely to get involved in drugs or bad behavior..

yet our president cuts federal funding of programs...and states, forced into budget crisis are forced to cut needed programs.

thumbs up!

And that's why both my youngsters are getting formal lessons (percussion and piano) on my dime.
They both started playing by ear and expressed an interest in lessons on their own.

It's a good time for the indie artist but because of the bootleg industry and file sharing, so much is lost by the majors and many are afraid to take risk. Many are just afraid. It's only natural that this would be reflected in an artists work.

There's a major metamorphosis going on in the industry. Not just the music industry but film as well. http://www.omn.org is a beta site that's based on the pier to pier networks (like kaaza, e-donkey etc...) but it's legit. Larger scale ones are being built now. These will allow for the sharing of personal files but will also have DRM built in if you wish to charge a fee. Google is going to have a version that can be searched via it's search engine.

Once these are set up it's likely that there will be a major crack down on the free file-sharing networks as there was with Napster. At this point things will probably stabilize and there will be less fear and more risk/creativity.

Time will tell.

Yes, but then again, there are the few that are always trying to break new ground. That's why I like Alternative and Indie Rock. At least in that genre, there's bands always trying to push things forward.

I agree! Really Music has really fallen apart because of everyone thinking of making money & MTV. Artist should be artist. Not worry about radio friendly, etc

You guys should check out the new Mars Volta album "Frances The Mute." Most of the new bands out there and just retreading the same old territory but these guys BLEW MY MIND! This album is a MOTHERFUCKER! They're crazy!! And I think they have some deal worked out that they pretty much license their music to the label which is pretty intersting. JUst go buy it, right now!

I'm sure there is some good stuff out there but it is a damn shame that you have to go looking to find it. Hell, you didn't used to have to go find it, there were radio stations that played it. It's not a matter of getting older either because I can remember my mother, back in the day, loving a lot of the stuff that was current at the time and she also had blues stations with stuff that she was into more and I wasn't. With a dial full of radio stations, it's damn rediculous that not one will play anything worth a damn except for the oldies stations.

Even if you do find anything current that is good, no one else knows about it. If no one else knows about it then there will be no clubs worth a damn either. I'm age 37 and I'm in the "forgotten" generation (as far as music goes) so to speak. I'm too old for hip hop clubs and too young for blues clubs. Most people my age are married with children. I'm single with no kids, no dog, no white picket fence, no damn station wagon, and I wish to keep my situation just the way it is. A whorish motherfucker like me needs clubs to party in. The only reason I go to clubs nowadays is to get laid. I go to clubs that play house music, but it has all turned to techno now and it's very repetitive and all sounds alike. It didn't used to be like that. I used to go to party, dance, and have a good time and if I got laid, that was an extra bonus for the night.

No, I don't doubt there's good stuff out there but the radio stations need their damn asses beat for not playing it.
