Songs of Faith and Devotion

Anyone into this album? It's one of my favorite albums of all time.

I'm always torn between Violator and Songs of Faith as my favorite Depeche Mode album. I usually give Violator the edge for sentimental reasons, but Faith is also an undeniable album. Despite the fact that it hit #1, the album is also one of the most underrated and forgotten CDs of the '90s. I was in Coconuts yesterday, and they were selling the CD new for $1.89!!

Anyway, favorite songs on the album:

I Feel You
Condemnation
Judas
In Your Room
Get Right With Me
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

The Devotional DVD from this tour was also incredible. Never thought Depeche Mode would cut it as a live act, but this changed my mind.

My favorite songs:

1) I Feel You
2) In Your Room
3) Rush

Martin Gore is a brilliant songwriter. And yes, I believe the Devotional live DVD captures them at their peak.

I saw them live in Boston in 2001 on the Exciter Tour, and although I miss Alan, they were quite amazing nonetheless.

I absolutely adore this album. Except perhaps for "I feel You"
which I always confuse with "Personal Jesus" for some reason..

The rest of the album though, is superb. I like the dark and
brooding atmosphere of it. Especially the sexual aspect of it.
It's not just dark but it's a sensual kind of shimmering that
shrouds the entire album.

That's what makes it so good, the entire thing feels like one
cohesive groaning beast that eyes you from it's alcove from
the beginning of the album to the end.

I'm talking nonsense again, I know. But I like that biggrin
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Songs of Faith and Devotion has some great tracks on there, but also some weaker material.

I would have to say that Violater is their most consistent studio album, but live double CD "101" is their crowning glory.

DM have that happy-sad, bittersweet vibe that so many great bands have.

Agreed. But Some Great Reward, Black Celebration and Songs... are all up there.

Oh God, yes yes yes.

'spesh Black Celebration, a particular fave of mine nod drool

Incidentally, my bro had Songs of Faith..so I bought the live album of it - ie all the same songs in the same running order but live. What do other orgers think of that?

Was it a good idea to release a live duplicate of a studio album...?

The album would have been even better with Death's Door on it.
