Tweet talks about her skin color..... Ok this is a touchy subject and I guess it's a bit awkward to discuss but we're all adults here so why not?
I was just reading an article in Vibe Magazine about Tweet and she mentioned how she used to have a complex about the color of her skin. I was a little sadened to read that though I think I know how she feels. I'm dark skinned too. I'm half west african and half british and I think I felt the same way she did as a kid but by the time I reached about 15 (you know hitting puberty) those feelings went out the window because I started to accept myself and feel more comfortable in my skin and i've always had guys tell me they thought I was attractive and how much they liked my complection, so it really hasn't crossed my mind for years now. I'll be damned if someone makes me think i'm not atttractive because of my skin. You don't see many dark skinned pop stars these days and I wonder why? Grace Jones was seen as scary because she was so androgynous but I bet her skin tone had something to do with that as well. Seems like if you're a black woman and you don't look like Beyonce you're not hot. Tweet is a beautiful woman and she could really be a great role model for other women who are dark and show us that you don't have to be light skinned to be attractive. Anyway, i'd love to get some thougts and feedback on this matter. Let the drama unfold..... | |

It's a prejudice I'll never understand. I think it's wonderful that people are coloured differently. How bland it would be if we were all the same shade. | |

Well that's human nature. That's why I hate the term "color-blind society". People need to be honest with themselves. We all notice color, and to me, it's not a bad thing. There's nothing with acknowledging/and being proud of our differences. Living in NYC, I love the diversity here - it's what makes America great. The problem is when certain folks use skin color as a badge of superiority. Unfortunately, it's never going away. | |

I think she's gorgeous...
It's all about the individual person's look. I'm not into the whole thing of having a certain type, be it hair colour or ethnic background - never have been. You see someone and say "Oh mah lawd" (obviously in a Morris Day voice) and that's it... [Edited 4/22/05 18:50pm] | |

I would think she would be more insecure with that little overlapping tooth. Regarding the industry's lack of dark skinned pop stars you know very well it's all about what they can sell. In their minds caramel and hi-yella sell better than chocolate especially when it comes to women. thats CRAZY.when i was younger i was chocolate but now that im older i guess i got lighter-dont ask me how i lightened up...it just happened,lol blame my YELLOW mom anyway,i was never teased until i went out with this boy when i was 12 who was far 2 old 4 me and he teased me about everything including my complexion...even tho he was the same complexion  ---anyway,i see how the music industry treats like darker artists...mostly the women.but its CRAZY cuz at school people get teased 4 bein 2 light and ppl get teased 4 bein 2 dark.me and my friend are about the same complexion and we were talkin about how me and her would just make it in2 a music video...if we were one shade darker we'd probally be denied...thats just CRAZY 2 me! | |

In any society, the darker you are, the more hell you'll catch. I saw a special on the children of Vietnamese women & American soldiers a while ago. The ones with white fathers were treated much better than the children of black fathers. It's sad what happens to those kids.
Now I have latino friends who told me geting married to someone lighter than you is considered "marrying up" in their families. Look at Spanish TV. You rarely see dark-skinned latinos in any meaningful roles. They're all light or honey-colored with straight hair. All this sh!t comes from the legacy of slavery when darkness was considered a sign of inferiority. It's still with us today, and it'll never go away. [Edited 4/24/05 11:40am] | |

The fact that I can actually REMEMBER LL Cool J having a dark skinned woman as the love interest in the "I Need Love" video says a lot NOBODY would put dark skinned women in their videos as the main girl, only as backup dancers. I don't watch videos anymore but I would imagine it's still pretty much like that (if Black women are even featured as love interests anymore, lol, somebody let me know). I wish the day would come where we wouldn't hate ourselves, it's an unbelievably sad cycle... I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! the plight of darker hued people in the united states and Europe is not an uncommon one. the prevalence of light skinned people in the music biz and the rest of the entertainment industry does nothing but re-inforce the inferiority complex that europeans have tried to inculcate into the minds of african americans & Latinos for generations. the acceptance of that complex manifests itself in several ways: You see african americans( hereto refferd to as AA.) trying to emulate caucasins :wearing Blonde hair; using makeup to look lighter; skin bleaching etc. that's why you see so many A.A & L. stars trying to look white, for example:
