"You can tell the president to suck my fuckin' dick!" [Edited 4/29/05 13:36pm] That song always makes me want to get down! And on top of that, they're expressing the same political beliefs that I'm feeling. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Anyways, !!! (pronounced chk-chk-chk) is an awesome new band. They're labelled "Punk-Funk" because, supposedly, they have the raw energy of Punk and mix it with the danceable grooves of Funk. I don't really see that too much if you ask me. Their productions are a lil' too slick and House-y, IMO. But you can clearly see that they're influenced by better examples of Punk-Funk like Liquid Liquid, Gang of Four, The Pop Group, etc. They also wear their left-wing politics on their sleeve like many of those old school Punk-Funk bands as well. I saw them live at the Siren Music Festival a couple of years ago and it was awesome. They're not a bad live act. In fact, I think they sound better live than on record because they have more of an organic feel. "Like I give a fuck, like I give a shit about that fucker....." Who is the Pop Group? I like that name.

I like that name. I'm very glad you asked. The Pop Group is an ironic title for this band. They don't sound pop at all. So don't be fooled if you listen to them and think you're gonna hear some Byrds/Mamas and Papas-type stuff. The Pop Group was a UK indie band from 1978-1981. They were the perfect example of "Punk-Funk". They had the raw, hardcore intensity and spirit of Punk and fused it with the nasty grooves of Funk. In between they experimented with Dub, Free-Jazz, and whatever else they had on their minds. They were also very heavily political. I mean SERIOUSLY political. They make Rage Against The Machine sound like N*Sync. They talked about stuff like famine, war, poverty, and basically said fuck the system in more ways than one. The lead singer never sang as much as he did whisper/scream like a mental patient gone berserk. And the music was always intense yet exciting. They released 2 albums and a few comps on Rough Trade Records. My favorite track is "We Are All Prostitutes". It's a crazy ride. There may be groups that were influenced by them (in fact, they had a major impact on the Bristol, UK scene), but there's absolutely nothing that sounds like The Pop Group. www.thepopgroup.net NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

They sound righteous! I will listen for some samples online.
