I saw Spinal Tap live at Wembley Stadium (Freddie Mercury tribute concert)... very funny!

Just as funny as the original film is the commentary on the DVD with each actor playing the part of the original band members.

I'm glad you started this thread, Luv4, because I LOVE this movie! I bought the dvd last year & I watch it rather often!


this film was SO CLEVERLY done.. they really poked fun at the genre of music in general & at certain.. rock bands in particular! they really went through the "evolution" of a typical rock band from that period:
- they had their "mod/pop" period ("gimme some money") of the early 60s
- their "psychadelic" period ("listen to the flower people") of the late 60s
up to their "current "hard rock/metal" period..


my favorite song in the movie is definitely "big bottom"..
I like how all 3 of them are playing bass in the song, & how during the little break in the song David & Nigel are shaking their "bottoms"
a lot of the lyrics (in "big bottom" & in other songs) are clever too :

"big bottom, big bottom
talk about bumcakes my girl's got 'em
big bottom drive me out of my mind
how could I leave this behind?"

NICE "double entendre" in that last line!


to me here are the 3 FUNNIEST scenes in the movie:

- when the are backstage in Cleveland ("hello Cleveland!") & they leave the dressing room to go on stage.. & they GET LOST backstage!!!

- when they're doing the song with the "cocoons" on stage & Derek's cocoon won't open.. until the very end of the song! by the time he gets out, David & Nigel have gone back into theirs!

- then of course.. "Stonehenge"! the very 1st time I saw this scene in the movie, I was LITERALLY rolling on the floor, cramped up & laughing in tears! that TINY Stonehenge on stage, with those "dwarfs" dancing around it..
TOO FUNNY!

there are several other little FUNNY moments - like when Nigel confuses "sexist" with "sexy"..


then from all the "bonus footage" of the movie that
comes with the dvd, I like that 1 outtake where they've just had a great performance on stage & the band talks about how they kicked ass & all that & how FULL the arena was..
only to learn that most of the people got into the show for free..
the look on their faces..!


yeah, there really were so many clever jokes & puns in "Spinal Tap", & I also liked all the other actors they had in the movie - Howard Hessman ("Dr. Johnny Fever" from 1 of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE sitcoms, WKRP), Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Fran Drescher (that accent - "where's my phoTAWGrapha?"), Paul Benedict ("Mr. Bentley" from "The Jeffersons"), Paul Schaefer (from David Letterman), Fred Willard..


the funniest rock & roll movie I've ever seen!
hell, I will probably watch it sometime this weekend.

The getting lost backstage was based on Led Zeppelin because that actually happened to them at Madison Square Garden once. In fact, a LOT of the movie pokes fun at Zeppelin. In fact, Robert Plant was just talking about how true, but ridiculous some of those scenes were because it was really like that at times for them.

Yeah, and the Stonehenge thing is classic. I was also laughing so hard I was crying at that one.

The scene where their manager says, "Do you have any idea how much it will cost to dress the band up as animals?!"

don't forget the "lick my love pump" sequence.

When that wee stonehenge obelix floated down on a string I hyperventilated.

i have to say, i've loved each of the films post-Tap which Guest has done, too.

especially best in show.

none have quite scaled the heights of Spinal Tap, but all definitely worth a watch (several times).

I know this movie by heart. It's a part of me, who I am, no less.

other funny tidbits that are coming back to me:

- when they go to that opening night party & Ian says "this is Soho.." & 1 of the guys says, "so what??"

- when they get to 1 of their last gigs - in that amusement park - & their name appears UNDER "puppet show"..

- with Nigel no longer in the band, the review what they can play at this show & realize that they have about 10 minutes of music.. they decide to do their "jazz oddessy"..

I did see "best in show", which was also rather funny
& I also saw the 1 they did as a parody of folk music - "break like the wind"??
the folk parody was alright, but I suppose I appreciated it less because I know MUCH LESS about that type of music..

it would be interesting to see someone do a "Spinal Tap"-like parody of 70s funk (the P-Funk mob?) or the Minneapolis scene of the early 80s..
thought you-know-who probably would not like that idea..

It's a nice little film, and the music is good, but i was maybe expecting a little more, because folk music (much as i love it) is gasping for parody. there's more 'acting' in this, and less burst-out-laughing moments.

Yeah, a lot of it was based on Zeppelin. For example, when, who is it, David's hated girlfriend makes him this sweater with all the planets on it to wear. That's a dig at Jimmy Page's solar system pants he always wore in '73.

And then when Nigel plays the guitar with an entire violin, as opposed to Jimmy Page's playing with a violin bow.

Spinal Tap rocks. My favorite is "Stonehenge". It's perfect! Did they actually play the instrustments? I know it was a joke, but they could rock!

I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem *may* have been, that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being *crushed* by a *dwarf*. Alright? That tended to understate the hugeness of the object.

I really think you're just making much too big a thing out of it.

A Classic. I have the whole thing completely memorized I have watched it so many times, but I still watch it and laugh. "If I told them once, I told them a thousand times, put Spinal Tap first and puppet show last."
