William DeVaughn - Be Thankful for What You Got

Love this album. An album that's soulful, funky and inspirational would be laughed at and labeled as corny by today's standards, but this is one beautiful album. Obviously, it's best known for the #1 R&B track Be Thankful for What You Got, but it's also got a good number of other album tracks:

Blood Is Thicker Than Water
Kiss and Make Up
Sing a Love Song
You Can Do It

I don't think he was given a fair shake, because his sound was (admittedly) really similar to Curtis Mayfield's. I also find it strange that the title track - an inspirational, uplifting tune preaching against materialism - has been sampled to death by a genre that glorifies wealth and material possessions.

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls
TV antennas in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall

Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin' the scene
With a gangsta lean
Gangsta whitewalls
TV antennas in the back

You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got

Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin the scene
With a gangsta lean, wooh-ooh-ooh
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin the scene
With a gangsta lean, wooh-ooh-ooh
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin' the scene
With a gangsta lean, wooh-ooh-ooh

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls
TV antennas in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall

Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin' the scene
With a gangsta lean, wooh-ooh-ooh
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin' the scene
With a gangsta lean, wooh-ooh-ooh...

nod This is a definite 70's classic that has been sampled in hell of a lot of rap records.
