I must admit, Mariah's album is pretty good

Get Your Number is a straight up beat

Take away some of the corney cuts with Nelly, Twista ,etc and it's actually a pretty good album. Most of it is more soulful than I had expected. "Fly Like A Bird" has lush 70s sounding soul just dripping from it. As a Mariah hater I just had to give it up to her out of fairness. If you haven't given the album a chance I suggest you do so.

Get your number is one of my favorites on this album and overall I think it's pretty good and has a lot of 70's influence. Mariah is back! biggrin

I agree, the album is very good.Months ago, when I heard about all the guest rappers and the list of producers,I assumed it would be yet another run-of-the-mill R&B album. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very good,well-produced album with virtually no filler.Vocally,Mariah sounds GREAT and there are some real hooks and melodies here. She's gonna go really far with this album.

While I agree with most of what you said, the one thing I'm not so sure about is how the album will do over the long hall. Mariah may have trouble selling records to the under 25 crowd who seems to care little about melodies or hooks. And the list of guest rappers might scare off the older record buyer. I know I wasn't expecting the soulfulness of many of the cuts based on the first single and the line up of guest stars. It was just by chance that I heard the whole album and found out it was as good as it is. I think the way this album is being marketed could be its undoing in the end.

It sounds almost interesting enough to buy. Almost! Maybe I should buy it in order to prep myself for the new Janet....from what it sounds like, she's going to be working with a lot of rappers. the Neptunes and JD....And what was the strengh of "Damita Jo" (sorry for turning this into a Janet post but it's relavent).

I will admit to being one of the bigger cynics and critics of mariah on this board, so this weekend i took the time to listen to it on the internet, and I will concede that this is better than the dirge she's released in the last 5 years. There are certainly a few cuts on there that are well produced little numbers, and she is actually singing on them - not whining.

However, I cant see it being a massive album in the way her early 90's albums were. The actual songs themselves just aren't strong enough. She needs to employ some actual songwriters on the next outing, then get the cutting edge producers in.

Funny thing is, other than "Get Your Number" those songs with guest stars drag the album down. I give it a 3 out of 5 but would have added a 4th star had it not been for the tracks with Nelly and Twista.

Well, people have been saying that for a loong ass time about Mariah and look who is following this disturbing trend. Both ladies probably think it doesn't hurt album sales but I wouldn't be shocked if it aleinates their loyal fan base!

I can't stand the Nelly track, talk about phoning it in - c'mon, Nel. But I'm diggin' several of the songs quite a bit. I do, however, miss her covering a song originally done by a male artist. I believe she has included one of these on every album (correct me if I'm wrong) since 'Emotions'.

I love the track with Snoop,"Say Something",which was originally planned as the first single,if I'm not mistaken.I'm surprised that I don't have any problem with the songs that feature guest rappers.Usually,an album like this----with multiple guest rappers...hip-hop producers.....samples spread throughout the album----turns me off.But this project stands out because the actual songs are very good, and Mariah's own performance is great. The guest stars don't really drag it down, imo.Plus, the slower tracks and ballads are some of the strongest stuff she's done in years."Mine Again" is destined to become a new Mariah classic.

U guys are right. If someone always wanted to hear a real Mariah album this is definitley the one. Much more interesting than the rest of her albums..even Butterfly...which died after "Whenever U Call" and then that terrible remake of "The Beautiful Ones" didnt help.

This album stands as a whole and flows together (even 2 of the ones I dont like "One and Only & Get Your Number) okay.

The slow jams are really the standouts..

Joyride
Circles
We Belong Together
Fly Like A Bird
Stay The Night
Mine Again
If U Only Knew

They are worth the album alone...sum of her best recordings ever.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I'm ok with the Snoop cut. You notice I didn't meantion it in with the other guest tracks. While it's not the greatest, it's far better than those cuts with Nelly and Twista. If that was the only track along those lines I would have went with 4 stars for thise album. Also the lead single was a very poor choice.

Harlepolis

Say Something is SOOOOO out-of-place when it comes to Mariah and her taste of recording songs.

That song is the most different shit she evan done in her career since "Subtle Invitation" IMHO.

BTW is it me or did she paid a DIRECT homeage to Deniece Williams in the songs "Circles" & "Fly Like A Bird"?

Man, I love Say Something. It's just so smooth and with a nice groove and plain fun especially when I'm driving. I think one of the key things about this album is that it's short and to the point. The whole album is under an hour and one song is about 2:46 and another 3:15, not dragging on with 17 tracks of fillers and interludes and remixes and hidden tracks. Altho some may argue that the rap collabos are fillers they're good for what they are and are nice breaks between the serious songs or serious'vocal tracks'.

I like "we belong together" takes me back to the old Mariah I don't like when she does the hip hop.

That's my favorite song off the album. It's funky and smooth and I agree with Harlepolis, it is different than what we're used to from "Mimi". The album is tight and it's the most enjoyable album of hers since Butterfly. It's nice to be able to say that about a Mariah Carey album again.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The beat is tight and her part is good too..but I cannot just sit without skipping it when JD juzst HAS to come on sounding more irritating than Nelly himself with AWW DAYM DA KLUUUB BOUT TA CLOSE INNA MINNIT rolleyes No no no!! But then the rest of it is good....chorus..horrible.

You've summed up my opinion of the entire album lol

This is a fun,solid album.There are no gimmicks,no silly interludes,no filler.It's just a well-produced collection of strong R&B songs.

LOL Since when can JD stay quiet on anything he produces. Funny cause I thought he was doing a Pherrell/Nelly take on that track too. But I must admit..... I like his part on the track boxed
