Did U see the excellent Sly Stone documentary "Skin I'm in"? There's a spot there when his sister Rose is doing that song alone by the piano with an incredible feeling that gave me the goosebumps. /peace Manki

I have many Sly faves, but I'll just end up listing what's already been listed. If a gun was put up to my temple, I would bargin for two of my all-time Sly faves.
"Hot Fun In The Summertime" and "If You Want Me To Stay". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

this song IS the jam!
what I often like to do is play this song in "mono stereo".. it has an even more "psychadelic" feel too it, it's like you don't hear any drums or percussion.. especially the "wah-wah" guitar & harmonica break before the 3rd verse.. this is a COOL way to hear this song & I also like the way they sing the verses : 1 line high, 1 line low.. I think I LOVE the "glug glug, gl-gl-gl glug" of the rhythm guitart the most.. yeah.. THIS is what makes this song, in my opinion! damn! I am going to play this jam as SOON as I get home! I'll see you tonight..

Those are what I call "Sly's High" songs. Anything from "There's A Riot Goin On" on down. Sly, to me, just let his state of mind and state of condition "in" as an actual "part" of certain songs. From the way shit was recorded, the sound, the mix, some of the playing, etc. Sly wanted that "high vibe" in there. And I dig that type of material from him. Anyone ever hear the Sly song "Stanga" in which his sister's group, Little Sister, sings on? Would you say it's on the same level as Little Sister's, You're the One?

I remember a musician(I think it was Tommy Barbarella, of all people!!)saying that "funk is more about the space between the notes, rather than the notes themselves"--for me that dovetails right into with what Sly and Miles ( and P-Funk, on forward) were doing....Miles's sidemen were always talking about his use of space... ... ... That concept sounds like it's directly from Miles himself. Regarding the use of space, I believe he once said something similar to, "the notes you DON'T play are as important, if not more important than the notes you do." I also wanna give a nod to "Luv & Haight". That's got to be one of the funkiest tracks Sly has ever produced. It funks so hard, you feel like you're sucking on a lemon. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

yes, this is definitely one of the tightest and baddest grooves in the family stone catalogue. It's amazing that such a narcotic, weary album would be opened by a such an aggressive, exuberant song and that it still fits into the disquieting, druggy whole.
