This song has had an interesting history and has caused more than a few disputes amongst the band members over the years....

It was recorded in 1976 for the "Rumours" lp ... but, much to Nicks' disappointment, was left off the album due to time limitations.

Nicks had arranged for her mother to recieve publishing royalties for the song.

It was then released as the B-side to "Go Your Own Way" and quickly forgotten.

Many years later , around 1990, Nicks intended to place the song on her solo "Greatest Hits" album that Modern Records was preparing , only to be told by Fleetwood that it wouldn't be possible. This angered Nicks who reportedly claimed "This song wasn't good enough then, and you won't even let me have it back now?". This event, coupled with Nicks' disgust at Fleetwood for revealing their affair in his autobio, caused Nicks to leave the group in the early 90's.

The song then appeared on the 1992 FM Boxset and actually got play on the radio, in spite of being a 15 year old song.

Then in 1997 , ironically , when the reunited group performed the song for "The Dance", the new live version charted as a single.

I guess Nicks had the last laugh lol

One of their best songs! Next to 'Sara' this is my favorite Fleetwood-era Stevie Nicks track.

The bridge..('Time cast a spell on you') just blows me away...and the way it just builds until Stevie goes off on her vocal acrobatics....just amazing...

The demo version on the 2nd disc of the 'Rumours' remaster is also really good.

These reissues are all so great and it just saddens me that it's rare that you find an album now that you can listen through all the way through and just blow your mind. So much that you repeat all night long!

i hate this dvd! it is practically not even a live disc; all of the close ups and much of the performance was re-taped on a soundstage. this was the height of stevie's drug addiction and she just wasn't able to perform. i always feel bad for stevie when i think of this video. "cocaine is a hell of a drug."

i wonder how purplegypsy feels about this video?

We need to get some bootleg concerts in these people's hands - 1977 Japan! 1979 St. Louis! 1980 Birmingham! 1981 Los Angeles! 1982 Los Angeles! THE DANCE TOUR! TISL TOUR! Those are examples STEVIE NICKS alive and kicking (literally).

"Silver Springs" has been there last big hit (even though I don't see it on any charts from Allmusic.com) because it played on radio for years and nothing from "Say You Will", although there were some good single choices (could have been better ones), stuck around that long.

thats cause christine's backing vocals werent on em.. lurking

seriously though.....next to the sonic boom created by wendy and lisa when they harmonize, christine, stevie and lindsey are they best harmonizers....did i spell that right? i wish the three of them realized that...it takes all of them together to create that beautiful soung. its a national treasure.....they should never let it go*..

DiamondGirl

Since Stevie came up:

Stand Back
Inspired by Prince

I got married the day I wrote this song. We were driving to Santa Barbara and a new song by Prince came on, so we pulled over somewhere to get the tape. It just gave me an incredible idea, so I spent many hours that night writing a song about some kind of crazy argument, and it was to become one of my most important of my songs. I’ve been doing this song for years, Fleetwood Mac does it also, and I never get tired of it. “Stand Back” has always been my favorite song onstage, because…when it starts, it has an energy that comes from somewhere unknown…and it seems to have timespace. I’ve never quite understood this sound…but I have NEVER questioned it.
I became a different person, and like that, because usually I make my OWN characters…but the lady in Stand Back was not my idea. By the way, Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synsthesizer on it…and then he just walked out of my life, and I didn’t see him for a long time.
It was extraordinary….

From DMSR:
“Stevie was inspired to write "Stand Back" after hearing "Little Red Corvette" on the radio. She called Prince to tell him and she wanted to give him some credit. “

KenHold from amp states
“The story as she told it goes more or less like this... she was driving with her new husband up to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon and they heard Little Red Corvette on the radio for the first time. They found a record store and bought the single and Stevie started making up and singing lyrics along to LRC which then became Stand Back. She says try singing Stand Back to LRC and you'll see how it fits in (I didn't have any luck when I tried this wink)... so anyway, when she finally did get around to recording Stand Back, about halfway through recording she got Prince's number (with some difficulty) called him up and told him she was at Sunset Sound recording a song inspired by LRC and if he would like to come down and hear it. Prince showed up about 20 minutes later at the studio, sat down at the synthesizer and did a couple of synthesizer parts in one take each and then as Stevie put it "walked out of her life". “

IM guessing the song she heard by Prince was Little Red Corvette...its been said Stand Back has the same sort of chord or melody structure...synth opening etc...then verse with loud LRC-like chorus...hence the verse and the Stand Back chorus

Another interesting thing I‘ve always felt was that the synths and the “dubba dubba” sound of some of them sound like his I Would Die 4 U which he would later record.

Some say this song she wrote later is about Prince is called Thousand Days (from her box set)

Here is what Stevie said about Prince: Billboard April 18, 1998 "'Thousand Days' was written about my non-relationship with Prince," says Nicks, who had earlier composed "Stand Back" with him - although she notes he's never called her back "to set up his payment on 50%" of the latter. "Days" recounts an abortive, all-night '80s recording session with him at his Minneapolis home during a Fleetwood Mac tour, climaxing with Nicks "smoking my pot - he didn't agree with my lifestyle - and going to sleep on Prince's floor in his kitchen. I like him, but we were just so different there was no possible meeting ground."

Here is the lyrics of Thousand Days (at least according to Stevie, Prince is one of her great loves):

The closest you've ever come to me
Was to help me up the stairs
You stood in the middle of the stairway
You nearly dragged me up the stairs
"You've been asleep."
"Well, I've been asleep for how long?" she says
"Why do you question me?"
He says, "You never cared about time before, my friend."

Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone...
Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone...

You're not my friend, you're not my love
And this is something that we really don't discuss
If there is no time, and there is no place.
And, if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace
And as all arch angels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too
Well, I found you

Quiet now, songbird, just for one night
Well, I know that you love to sing
And, oh baby, well, I know that you love to write
You live by the light of the moon
and I live by light of desire
Ooh, such words to her over the phone
"Just how many people are there with you now"

Well, I can see the trouble
The sun is here today and I requested a storm
But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition,
Tradition, competition...
Being the only thing that I really have to remember
The great singers and the great players

And if the sun warms up the rain,
And the rain puts out the sun
Why does the greatest love become the greatest pain?

So, where are you?
Sometimes I hear you crying
and I wake up, and still I wake up crying

Well, he is on my mind..he's everywhere
And if he followed me home,
will the sound of both of our voices simply disappear?
Well, I miss you now...

He laughs
He has an attitude so I have an attitude, too
He knocks on the door next to the courtyard
Well, he frightens me so, I let him in
But I'm already, well, I'm already screaming
How can the greatest love come from the greatest pain?
