XTC - DEAR GOD

I like this song, but it's really blasphemous and also knida silly in it's reasoning. I dunno, I like John Lennon's God (probably because it's such a personal album) and I listen to heavy metal, but there's something thats unsettling about Dear God.

I don't think so.

Dear god, hope you get the letter and...
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving in the street
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from god
I can't believe in you

Dear god, sorry to disturb you but...
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about god
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god don't know if you noticed but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you
Dear god
I can't believe in
I don't believe

I won't believe in heaven or hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That father, son and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you
Dear god

OK
First he blames HIM of all evil on Earth
Then he says HE doesn't exist.

Actually, it was originally only issued as a B-side, and wasn't included on the album (Skylarking), And XTC's Andy Partridge (the composer) actually didn't like the song that much: "It failed for me. Man's belief is such a vast topic, and I originally wanted to write a song about religion and some of the problems I was having in my failure to grasp the whole thing...after I'd written it, I could think of a billion other things I wanted to say which were almost impossible to put into three and a half minutes...it's too massive a subject...Maybe I could have done it in three and a half albums...maybe..." utimately, he didn't want it on the album...

It became big only when U.S. college radio stations started playing it (it was the B-side to "Grass"), and getting requests to play it. It became a hit on the Us college circuit and Geffen turned around and reprinted the album, took one of the original songs off("Mermaid Smiled" -- a great track by the way, IMO) and added the "Dear God" track instead...

i like the song.there may be jokes or songs which in one way I consider very wrong,in terms of religion, but I still laugh or jam to the tune.I won't speak the words, though.

Those are fantastic lyrics.

I think the point in "blaming" a God he doesn't believe in means moreso that the act of believing in him hasn't done a damn positive thing. Can't say I personally disagree with him.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
