Any Acid Jazz fans out there? Just out of curiosity, I'd like to no if there are people here who in the early nineties listened to that wonderful vibe that was Acid Jazz.
Galliano, Incognito, Young Disciples (who, by the way, were probably the first to sample Prince), Urban Species, Corduroy and stuff like that????? I don't no if it was popular in the US, but it sure was here in Europe. I was a TALKING LOUD fan for sure!!!! Joyful funk that was!! "No one plays the clarinet the way U play my heart"

I witnessed a concert in which Carleen Anderson (Young Disciples)introduced her solo album: there were about 100 people, and I was the only one to no the lyrics!!!! I just about cried when N'Dea left the Heavies. God, I LOVE THAT BAND!! I heard somewhere that she was getting back with them but never heard anything about it since. I hope this happens. They bring out the best in each other. Brother Sister is one of the MOST perfect albums. I still can't get over how good it is. Thank God for Acid Jazz! I love it. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Luuuved Groove COllective!!!! I saw them live here in Rome at a festival called "Testaccio Village" many years ago and I was proud to see they had an Italian trumpeteer (spelling?) who was really cool! I think you no him, he's from Naples, if I remember well. I loved that group also because every musician had a different background, culturally, and the result was brilliant! Acid JAzz was cool for all of 1 year and a half. Took folks that long to realize they were listening to 70s jazz funk retreads. I like Galliano, though INCOGNITO was a bit too "smooth jazz" for me. Anybody get the REBIRTH OF THE COOL series? Miles Davis' DOO_BOP figures in here somewhere.
GreyBoy All Stars kept things nice and funky. An original funk/jazz band that had a lot of influence on the jamband scene. Some of the members have spun off to two different groups: KARL DENSON's Tiny Universe, ROBERT WALTER'S 20th CONGRESS. Though they still commune and jam together. One test

I like acid jazz a lot: Incognito (I would love to work with them!), Brand New Heavies (N'dea era, of course), Groove Collective. If you are into acid jazz and haven't checked them out already, listen to Les Nubians' Princesses Nubiennes album -- perhaps the best release of that year.

One I've got all the Rebirth of Cool series, on vinyl of course, although I'd love to have them on CD. I agree with you Ingognito were pretty commercial, but I enjoyed some of their stuff nonetheless. For me it lasted more than one year and a half: the natural consequence to 70's jazz funk had many faces and so I really enjoyed it all the way through. When it became more electronic, approximately around 1995, I luved IZIT, who wrote some special grooves. Glad to see you were "caught" in this vibe, even if for a short time. I've got that, too, and with my band, we had Rebirth in our repertoire for a long time. Have you ever listened to "Imaginary man" from IZIT??? Definitely a "must-have"! "No one plays the clarinet the way U play my heart"

I haven't got that although that group appears in one of the Rebirth of Cool set(maybe the first) Thanx for the suggestion. "No one plays the clarinet the way U play my heart"

Well, in 1988, a rapper named Derek Bolan (or Derek B 4 short) released a track called "Bad Young Brother" which sampled "Sign Of The Times". I was and still am well in2 the 'Acid Jazz' scene, I just recently managed 2 acquire Corduroy's "High Havoc" album and "Mini". I still love "Totally Wired 9" just 4 Maxton 'Gig' Beesley's "High Vibes"! Just 2 clear something up... is Maxton 'gig' the father of Max or is it the same person? Omar still stands out 4 me tho', I have his version of Bob Marley's "Natural Mystic" which sounds absolutely amazing along weith Incognito's very first "Jazz/Funk" album in 1980... good 2 C the spirit of Jazz/Funk/Fusion is still alive... the new album "Journey In2 The Retrofuturistic" is coming soon, U can listen 2 the title track by clicking this link... http://www.dresounds.ukf....ourney.ram otherwise U can find out more via the website at www.drezone.ukf.net Love 'dre xxx <- 4 those who want/need it Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

One rebirth of cool was outstanding back then. I was one of the first DJs who played Acid Jazz in germany, but I got bored with it pretty quick when I found out it was nothing but a remake of old funk. they used to call it rare groove as well. thats when I got into the real shit. I still have about 400 records from those days, dont really listen or play them though... the only survivour of the movement is jamiroquai, who were true acid jazz pioneers before they signed with sony back in 92. whats left? nothing really. I ran into rob gallagher aka galliano in london about a month ago, he just cut a record under the name "earl zinger". but since he has never been too much of an acid jazz fan anyway I dint care for bying it... if we wanna give props to the few US acid jazz projects --- next to groove collective, karl denson and the greyboy allstars we should not forget slide five from SF and LA's finest Solsonics, who were the biggest act from the US in the european scene. they broke up in 96, but singer kevin williams and sax player derek davis have formed "butterflow", who are still around. drummer willie mc neal moved on to play with latin bands. pfunkjazz, were you around in the days of the famous "king king" club, LAs acid jazz joint in th 90s? they closed in 95 but reopened recently. back then the solsonics were born there. today is not much goin on from what I heard... "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany"

No, sorry. I never heard of KING KING until now, but I latched onto SOLSONICS debut cd and dug it much! Late 90s, I worked in Orange County and spent a lot of time in Irvine. Kind of unfunky back there,(though I saw PFUNK there 3 times and shows were great!) so I hit Long Beach a lot for blues. I also spent a lot of time catching the Neville Brothers.
Nowadays, LA's underground scene is less acid-jazz and more like jamband black metal funk. I hit places like TEMPLE BAR, 1650 (was Vynyl) Dragonfly and House of Blues books most of teh major acts. test
