Saint Etienne WHO LOVES THIS BAND?
The coming of spring always leads me back to Saint Etienne. Since breaking on to the scene in back in 1991 with Foxbase Alpha and the catchy as all heck cover of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" I have been hooked. Sarah's light and heavenly voice always melds so perfectly with the sometimes heartbreaking pop sounds of the band. The music at times feels so airy it may float away, but in a good way as it will take the listener with when it goes. Tonite I've been bonding with: I swear this is as perfect as pop can ever get. Catchy lyrics, joyous sounds and ENERGY. It's just making me want to and send some to this often overlooked band. SAINT ETIENNE Who's with me?

tiger bay is one of the yummiest albums in the world, especially the UK version of the album with 'tankerville' and 'western wind'. it's like the soundtrack to a movie that was never made.

I'm a fan since their second album so tough
You're in a bad way was the first song I heard and I just had to go buy the CD. From that day I've bought every album and Sarah's solo too. And now I even belong to their Lovers Unite Fan Club (at my age) (they sent me a free Xmas single not long ago )

Yes, I have a deep, passionate, completely un-ironic love for this band. I'd say that they're the most perfect pop act of the nineties. However, just to keep up my knack for always finding something negative to say no matter the topic, I'll point out that I think they're only the third-greatest band to be founded by a rock critic (Yo La Tengo and Pet Shop Boys are 1 and 2).

(And my coming down CD at other periods, but we won't discuss that. heh heh). If I was forced to pick, Hobart Paving would prolly be my favorite song by them. It's just lush. What's this fan club you speak of? I really should get out more. There prolly are sites on the intraweb than the org and yahoo

He's On The Phone came out in this country just before Christmas one year, when I was working in a record shop. It was played like a billion times every day, and has strong memories for me now. It's a great tune, but unfortunately it is inextricably linked with Christmas in my head, so I can't listen to it any other time of year without it seeming odd! "What the hell they playing this for, it's a Christmas song! Ferchrissakes, it's the middle of June...!" etc etc [Edited 4/13/05 2:21am]

I have the same kind of reaction with a Billy Bragg CD- I bought it and listened to it incessantly over the Xmas season, so now I have that same reaction to it when I hear it at other times of the year.

Thinking about it now, yeah, there are quite a few nothing-to-do-with-Christmas songs that have a Christmas association for me now... and Billy Bragg, btw.

I missed out on this band because they made a bad first impression. I never liked their cover of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" so I ignored them for years. I did get the 'Too Young To Die' comp and loved almost every track on that, but still refused to invest in a proper album. A friend of mine finally force fed me a few SE CDs most notably 'Finisterre' and Sarah's 'Lipslide' a few years back. I listened to those so goddamned much that this year I finally took the plunge and bought all their CDs (at least the ones I could find anyway). I'm currently slowly making my way through all of them in chronological order and simultaneously kicking myself in the head for resisting them for so long.

Ex-Moderator | and, oh yeah. I'm a casual fan. I enjoy them when I hear them. Don't own anything by them but have enough friends who listen to them regualrly I probably know everything they've put out by heart. |
