What about Res?

Admittedly I don't have her CD(s), but I've heard a few of her songs and really like them. Thanks for posting Dionne Farris...I wish she would come out with something new...maybe if she gets a weave they'll be able to market her confused

deals, but have failed to receive proper recognition for their talents and abilities. If radio treated these ladies with the same reverence as they do artists like Ashanti and Ashley Simpson, people probably wouldn't have such a distaste for the current playlists that plague the radiowaves on a daily basis.

she personifies everything thats wrong with today's radio. u nit!!!

razz

How so. She isn't on the radio? I think one major problem with the radio is you're either like Ashlee or Ashanti. You're eihter a pop R&B singer or a pop rock singer. No room for dance music (or alternative, or soul....).

If you don't sell that copy that you found at a charity shop, shame on you! I'm sorry, but it can't be $200 good!

she has just signed with a new label and will be releasing her already completed album this year.....

and pics from last year had her alternating between straight hair and the twists.....so who knows what look she will sport...the hair was about two inches in lenght in both cases...she looked great!!

Sorry. As I said in my earlier post, I deliberately excluded Res. Truth is, I don't think she's underrated because I don't thiink her voice is all that good. She's cute as hell, though. I excluded her and Fefe Dobson. Fefe is cute, too. Her records were a nice change. Funk-rock instead of pop fluff. The problem - her singing.

Christina Aguilera? Come on! This woman is NOT underappreciated. Neither is Liz Phair or Natalie Merchant. PJ Harvey...I guess. A little. Well, not really. Too much pop alt rock for you. No more sugar for a week, damnit!
Now Princess Superstar is an example of an underappreciated artist. That little chick finessed her way into the biz like no one else since Ani DeFranco (who although is an independant who worked very hard, is NOT underappreciated since she has a fanbase 50 miles long)
I don't even know Conya Doss, so I've got more research to do. Regina Belle is not really underappreciated overall, just underappreciated in today's music business. At least she can still get a deal, unlike Belinda Lipscomb (who?) The lead singer for Midnight Star.

I know there are about a million names that could go on a list like this, but I took the time to make a little presentation to display some that come to mind. With all the Britneys, Beyonces, and Christinas that get full blown media assault campaigns launched onto the public, I thought it might be good to throw out a few artists who have had record deals, but have failed to receive proper recognition for their talents and abilities. If radio treated these ladies with the same reverence as they do artists like Ashanti and Ashley Simpson, people probably wouldn't have such a distaste for the current playlists that plague the radiowaves on a daily basis. It would also set a much-needed standard for future artists to to attempt to aspire to. In a fair world, these divas would rule the radio.

Arn't all of these neo soul artists? (except Jane Child) So u'd prefer them to go overground and be hyped thus proberly then watered down by studio execs and then turned into crap? Be glad they are underground.

In UK Britpop started out great in the beginning, then it became crap. Nothing advanced. SOmetimes it is better acts stay underground. Just ask Kirk Cobain wink

No, I'd PREFER them to get their just dues in a just media. Of course I don't expect it to happen, but I wouldn't wish a limited income (underground) on these Sirens. They are all very gifted and should be respected for their works.
Kurt was never all that. Neither was Nirvana. When they were playing around at ROCNDY, they sounded like sh*t. Nobody outside of the Northwest cared about them until they made a profit in a year when the industry bottomed out. Of the Alt-Rockers, to me they were the one of the worst. Alice In Chains, SadHappy, etc. were way better.

p.s. THANK YOU BoriquaTeddy for putting me up on Conya Doss! Her CD is good. Talk about truly underappreciated!

Ok I thought is was just me about Ani (who I do like), Liz Phair, Natalie Merchant, and Regina Belle. Same thing goes for Stephanie Mills, great voice, great career. But she stoped doing secular music years ago to do gospel so I wouldn't put her in the underappreciated catagory.

This was a great thread, BK - thanks for posting those tracks. Was like getting a really cool mixtape!

If someone has the Cherokee track as an MP3, would they mind posting it? Thanks.

I was kinda heated that this lady did not get her due:

She's a wonderful lyricist.

Not too shabby on the eyes either.

Everybody here should check out a track of hers called "Empires".

But the question was who's underappreciated. Res is good for a change of pace, tho, and fine to boot. She should get more recognition notwithstanding her limitations.

Tho taking 4 years to follow up on a debut when you're hardly a superstar could be a career-killer.

Right now i am listening to Tori Amos cd Little Earthquakes, and i am wondering 'what a shame it all went downhills from there': great pianoplaying, classic melodies, thoughtfull lyrics...

And how could i forget Bjork? Homogenic is a splendid hybrid of electronics and strings, but it really is "Vespertine" that does it to me: I hear a strong woman on this record, being proud of her feminity, not some women calling herselve 'bitch', and thinking that makes impact...duh

On "Vespertine" i hear a women who's both strong and honest without playing some role, and she expresses this view with sometimes eerie, sometimes soultouching music.... Give me a girlfriend who's like that and i am happy for the rest of my life wink
