I know there are about a million names that could go on a list like this, but I took the time to make a little presentation to display some that come to mind. With all the Britneys, Beyonces, and Christinas that get full blown media assault campaigns launched onto the public, I thought it might be good to throw out a few artists who have had record deals, but have failed to receive proper recognition for their talents and abilities. If radio treated these ladies with the same reverence as they do artists like Ashanti and Ashley Simpson, people probably wouldn't have such a distaste for the current playlists that plague the radiowaves on a daily basis. It would also set a much-needed standard for future artists to to attempt to aspire to. In a fair world, these divas would rule the radio.

Great list and topic.

A few older underappreciated female artists I might add...

this is exactly why i consider neneh cherry underappreciated. i guarantee you, if you had a chance to listen to 'homebrew', or if you even had a chance to listen to her subsequent album 'man', you'd have a waaaay different opinion on her. i think she fell in the cracks, at least here in america, because she started making 'alternative' soul music. she didn't make cookie-cutter music, and it was hard to put a label on her. i mean, she did a duet with michael stipe on 'homebrew' that was all about teaching sex education in school, fer pete's sake! lol neneh cherry was about WAY more than 'buffalo stance', trust me. and because more people don't know that, she's a very good example of an underappreciated female artist. thanks for helping me make my point! smile

Thanks for bringing her to my attention. I will definately check out some of her other work.

My picks:
- Kate Rusby - welsh folk-pop singer with the soothing voice of an Angel
- Lucindia Williams - the uncrowned queen of Country-Rock
- Aimee Mann - knows how to write perfect pop-rock song, especially on her cd "Bachelor No. 1"
- Nathalie Merchant - especially when she sings quite, fragile songs
- Sarah Bettens - singer formerly from belgian band K's Choice: a smoky, almost horny sounding rockvoice
- The Indigo girls: especially on there first two records you can enjoy great folk-rock harmonies
- Sandy Denny : Formerly part of Folk-rock band Fairport Convention, a voice both fragile, eerie and strong.

Actually, this thread is about artists who either have careers now or are currently singing. Let's not broaden this out too far.

Nice mentions, but when I made this post, I was definately speaking of singers/musicians. There is no comparing someone like say, Patrice Rushen to Jean Grae. Although both are talented, they are miles apart. Someone like Vivian Green blows Rah-Digga away in my book. I'm trying to stay as on topic as possible here, because there are so many artists that can be discussed just within this category alone without expanding to rappers.

Make a CD-R copy of it. Sell it. Unless you have a torture chamber/house of horrors in your basement, there's no need to keep the real item.

Marilyn's CD "Walking With Strangers" is really nice! Adriana Evans has an album called "Kismet" that came out this year, but so far it's only an import...

Nice thread, blaque. ALL of the female vocalists u pictured, in one way or another, is the bomb in some aspect. It's amazing, every single pic u posted, I got hip to these artists by this girl I was seeing. She had all of this. Just one night, she unloaded all of this on me. She gave me cd's to take home and listen to. It was a drag in a way, cuz, as u mentioned, none of these artists gets the "true" push that they need. There are SO many reasons for this, but I won't get into that here. Anyway, good schooling to the masses.
