Yeah, George's music (Parliament/funkadelic/P-funk allstars) is for grown folks. i'm sure as years pass you'll find yourself liking him more and more. but, that all depends on you earning your stripes as a true funk soldier.

It was rated as one of the 100 greatest guitar solos by guitar magazine or Rolling Stone or whoever and I've never heard it but I know the story about it being created because George Clinton told Eddie Hazell he wanted him to think of saddest thing he could think of when he played and he should think of his mother dying. So I know about the song and the story behind it, yet I've never heard it, so it definitely has a reputation.

The whole Maggot Brain album is awesome. I think it's probably one of my favorite acid rock albums ever. The song itself rivals anything by monsieur Hendrix as one of the greatest guitar solos ever. I also love Super Stupid, which is probably Funkadelic's, and indeed P-funk's as a whole, hardest rocking tune. Can You Get To That is awesome Motowny soul (George was a staffwriter at Motown btw). Wars of Armaggeddon is a fine quasi musique concrete piece, the others are great rock-funk mixtures. The only even remotely lightweight tune is "Back in Our Minds" and it's still full of plenty absurd, idiosyncratic George Clinton goodness.

The guitar playing is more a tribute to Jimi Hendrix than Prince. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm I was listening to this album the other day. Eddie Hazel's performance is unbelievable. I think I read that George Clinton told him to play the solo as if his mother had just died or something to that effect. One of the greatest guitar solos of all time!

I'm glad u have discovered this. Yeah, it's by a great band called Funkadelic and it was released in 71 from the album "Maggot Brain". Please, don't get me started about Eddie Hazel, that cat that played the lead on the track, cuz I'll go on forever. I'll just simply say, Eddie is one of my main influences as a guitarists. Three questions: Eddie Hazel, I've heard some good things about him on this board. Any signature recordings of him that you'd recommend? Other question: how long have you been playing guitar, what kind and style of guitar do you play, and how would you compare your playing with Prince's? How would Eddie's style compare to Prince's? (No, not another who's "better" thread, more thinking about stylistic and musical differences and similarities). Some people tell me I've got great legs...

(No, not another who's "better" thread, more thinking about stylistic and musical differences and similarities). First answer. Anything that Eddie is playing on is what I would suggest. Some of my faves would be Funkadelic 70 -73, Eddie first solo album "Guitar, Dames and Thangs", and his work on Ruth Copeland's albums, to me, was some of his best playing ever. Second answer. I have been playing guitar, seriously since I was 15. I play a lot of different styles, mainly cuz I always listened to a lot of different music. Third answer. P and I have many of the same influences. Hendrix, Santana, Hazel, Brian May, etc. P has also been an influence on me as well. I grew up on P just like I did Hendrix. Even though we share similar influences, their are other cats that u may hear in my playing that P may not infuse. I don't think their is anyone who P isn't aware of. I often get compared to Hendrix, Hazel, Ernie Isley, and yes, Prince. It depends on the person and what and who their hip to. If someone says Hendrix or Hazel, then that's kinda obvious. If someone says Uli Roth from The Scorpions or Glen Buxton from Alice Cooper, Or Brian May, then I'm like "aahh, very good ear." SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. As I mentioned before, P has definately been influenced by Hazel, but so has Jessie Johnson. And P and Jessie couldn't sound any different from each other. So, again, it depends on your take and how you showcase your influence. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
