my DD review in my LJ from this past Friday (sorry so long):
Friday night – Duran Duran. We left home with enough time to make sure we weren’t late. We got to Fairfax around 710 or so - - - the show started at 8, so we grabbed a quick bite at McDonalds near the venue (there was a huge line of people, but we made it through the line pretty quickly), then headed over to the Patriot Center. The great thing about the Patriot Center is that it is usually very easy to get in and out of, and Friday night was no exception. We wandered around a little bit, looking at merchandise (there was a RIO shirt that I wanted, but it was $35.00), and finally made it to our seats about 15 minutes before show time. Our seats were pretty high up into the stratosphere, but we had a perfect view of the stage, so they were fantastic. At 8 the opening act came on. I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t know there WAS an opening act, and I was anxious to hear the Durannies. But from the first part of the first song, I was like – what the fuck? This band kicks ass. 4 members – female singer and guitarist, male bassist and drummer. They never said their name, but they were fantastic. (I later found out by searching online that it is actually a solo artist named Juliet, and her backing band. Her album comes out some time this summer.) Juliet has a great voice, and an interesting stage presence. She does a lot of sorta robotic dance moves. The music is a bit new wave, a bit alt-rock, some electronic elements thrown in, and the songs were very catchy and good. I enjoyed it. I will definitely be getting her CD when it comes out. Anyway, DD came on about 9:10, and they walked out and stood at the front of the state in a semi-circle with everybody cheering their heads off. I was like - - that’s Duran Duran out there!! Hehe. It was awesome. The audience went LOCO when they came out. It was an interesting crowd – it seemed to be mostly 30-somethings, but there were a lot of older and younger fans there as well. They played an incredible set. 5 or 6 tracks from the new album “Astronaut”, and the rest were classics, with a couple cool surprises thrown in. The band sounded fantastic, and LOUD (I had to wear ear plugs due to my hearing damage issues – but I still hear everything load and clear.) Simon’s voice has held up great over the years, and he sang with a great deal of power and intensity. The fans were pretty much up and dancing most of the show. During the slow songs they held up lighters and CELL PHONES (Lawdy, what has concert-going come to, people hold up cell phones now instead of lighters?? Or is this only a NoVA thing?) One of my favorite moments was Careless Memories, which is one of my favorite DD tracks. They played a ROCKING version of it (Andy Taylor was just amazing on guitar all night), with a really cool, and dark, film about the music industry shown on the screens behind them. Save a Prayer was amazing, the entire audience was singing along. That was probably my personal highlight – I had chills that whole song, it was incredible. Most of the big hits were there: The Reflex, Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Wild Boys, Notorious, A View to a Kill, Girls on Film – all with amazing energy. The new material sounded great, too, and fit right in with the classics. Simon LeBon stalked around the stage, moving all over the place - he really gave his all in the performance. The band seemed to be in a really good mood, they were smiling a lot, and interacted a lot of stage with each other. Before he sang Come Undone, Simon asked if there were any boyfriends & girlfriends in the crowd. People cheered. Then he asked if there were any BOYFRIENDS & BOYFRIENDS in the crowd! Another big cheer. Again, for girlfriends & girlfriends. He then said whatever makes you happy, this song is for all of you. It was nice. At one point Simon was explaining how he wrote the song “What Happens Tomorrow” from the new album, and he referenced that “your lovely President decided to start dropping bombs on Baghdad”. He went on to say that the song was in response to a child asking him if the bombing would lead to World War 3, and that nobody was sure what was going to happen tomorrow. It wasn’t really an anti-Bush speech, but there were still various people yelling during the story, and kinda booing because I guess they don’t like musicians to talk about their political beliefs – they just want to be entertained. Luckily they were drowned out by most people cheering. What is it with these people? It would be different if Simon was going on and on and on, but it was a very short explanation about how the song came about. Some people are just fucking clueless and obnoxious. Go see Toby Keith. This is Duran Duran. What did they expect their opinion about the war to be? But all in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better show. Have to thank Ham&Brendan again for a great Christmas gift, it was truly a memorable night!!! John Taylor!! Nick Rhodes!!! Andy Taylor!!! Roger Taylor!!! Simon LeBon!!!!! Heh. Duran Duran. Yes. Set list by album: Duran Duran (debut) – Careless Memories, Planet Earth, Girls on Film Rio - Hungry Like the Wolf, Hold Back the Rain, Rio, Save a Prayer, The Chauffer Arena – Wild Boys Seven and the Ragged Tiger – The Reflex, Tiger Tiger A View to a Kill (James Bond theme) Notorious – Notorious Big Thing – I Don’t Want Your Love Liberty – nothing Duran Duran (1993) – Come Undone, Ordinary World Thank you – White Lines (Don’t Do It) Medazzaland – nothing Pop Trash – nothing Astronaut – Sunrise, What Happens Tomorrow, Nice, Astronaut, Bedroom Toys After the show we stopped for dessert at Fridays to wind down and talk about the show. I know Mal enjoyed himself a great deal, as well.

It's so fun to go LOCO at a Duran concert! It's the best. Infectious. The audience feeds off of the band and vice versa. I think people call their friends on the cell phones so they can hear songs.
It's good to know their energy is still holding up. It must be such a rush for them to hear the crowd go nuts. Careless Memories is a great highlight. Sooooo much energy in that song... And being a heavy song with rockin drums and guitar from their debut album makes it really cool. Roger and Andy really drive that track. Simon was FRANTIC performing it here... it was like 1982 all over again. LOL @ Toby Keith. Great review, Jon! [Edited 4/12/05 23:32pm]

Yeah, I'm just happy to see them on tv at all. Simon's hair looked like he had highlights done, and got it cut. It was almost like Wild Boys era hair.

Thanks for sharing Jon! It brought back wonderful memories.
And of course I fall asleep and miss it. I don't think the tv was on the right station, which doesn't help. At least if the music entered my dream I would have awaken. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I'm baaaaack.
The show was so great! I love when Simon shakes his mofo ass! I really had to control the 10-year old in me but there were times when I freaked out ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY INTRODUCED JOHN and SIMON!! the setlist - no surprises here...but what threw me off was "I don't want your love" I don't know if they messed it up but Simon just kept walking around saying "I like noise" and then they sang the chorus a few times. no full verses -it was weird. Also thought the hooker back-up singer could have stayed at the back of the stage. Highlights for me...HOLD BACK THE RAIN, THE CHAUFFEUR, BEDROOM TOYS, NOTORIOUS WILD BOYS and SAVE A PRAYER (I have video clips, vina!!) I agree, the concert was the bomb. I had a blast, and the company was pretty hot too. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

That threw me off at first as well, but it was cool and sang along. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
