I Feel That Mariah's Essence Cover Caption Will Spark Controversy! But I agree with it

I think she is most misunderstood by her own self.
Well, as long as the birdie keeps chirping, its cool.

She looks pretty over here. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

Nah but "Most misunderstood black woman" that is. Why would that create controversy - she's mixed, isn't she? She's always claimed that quality makes her misunderstood by both whites and blacks, so that's probably why it's on the cover. [Edited 3/5/05 11:14am]

I like Mariah. I really do; but I think a lot of her "controversy" or "drama" is self created. I don't think I've heard anyone in recent years even discuss her race. Until she brings it up in an interview. They're are many mixed raced celebrities; Lenny Kravitz, Prince, Halle Berry, etc...I don't think they go on and on about how they don't fit into one catagory or another. Well Halle sometimes does. But in Mariah's case; she constantly brings it up. Embrace it, address it, then let it go!!!!! Another thing that really 'chaps my hide', is this incessant need to say "black" (i.e. "strong black woman", "misunderstood black woman" etc...) Once we see them, race will be apparent. But always having to put race on yourself or your 'title' just alienates (in a way) other people from being interested in anything else you'd have to say after that point. Be proud of your race, and wear it as a badge of honour if you will. But quit making it a point of controversy when it's really not.

p.s.
In her defense, I'm sure it was the magazine who decided on that caption anyway. So they are as much to blame for it.

Well if it was Shemar Moore on there or Dwayne Johnson sayig "Most Misunderstood Black Man" people wouldnt have a problem with it..but I guess in Mariah's case it is because she has blonde / brown long hair and very caucasian features that lots of black women do not have...but still in sense you can see some hints of black in her, facial structure and cheeks maybe.
But it would be different if they had Teena Marie's face on there saying the same caption. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Well, as long as the birdie keeps chirping, its cool. Who ever thought it was a time when Mariah would be comfortable with claiming herself as a Black women. I guess after Halle's success she said what the hell and decided to give it a try. Very interesting how life makes people change thier perspectives and perceptions of self.

Let me take a cynical point of view, I see this as an attempt to get one the good side of Black women's view of her by appealing to her blackness and hoping that Black women are more forgiving and understanding of her. I certainly haven't read the article yet, I won't speculate on what's in it. If she is looking for a way back into the spotlight, she may be hoping that Blacks are more willing to give her a chance than others. I've read before where she acknowledges that her father is Black but he was from Brazil, as if being an American Black is something to be afraid of. I'm more than willing to be wrong in my assessment, let Mariah tell us the truth. Jeux Sans Frontiers

She's developed the habit of trotting out apparent prejudice against her biracial roots at the launch of the last few albums. Some people may have trouble believing that since she's gone out of her way throughout her career to appear as white as possible, but who knows. Maybe she's being genuine, maybe she's not. It is a struggle for many people. [Edited 3/5/05 18:55pm]

That ESSENCE caption takes me back to my Freshman year of college. I was in my dorm watching MTV and a "Celebrate Black History Month" commercial aired. They flashed a series of black celebs (including Mariah). My roommate (who was white) was tickled (and shocked at the same time) by that and said "MARIAH?! They just flashed Mariah's face." I told him, Mariah is mixed with black. And he just gave me this look like, "errr, whatever you say." -- and kept it moving.

Mariah's problem is that she picks which race she wants to be as she drops every single album. She's not misunderstood, she's just full of shit. &
