I've been listening to Shockadelica like every single day-- I love that song! So when I was searching it, I came across Jesse Johnson...a funk artist? Who is this man, I don't know if I'm out of it, (you can poke fun if every knows except me), but I know he has an album titled "Shockadelica". Was he inspired by Prince, and what would this word/name mean to him? I just thought Prince made that up. So who exactly is he, and is he well known????

Left the band after 1990.

Prince's song was a stab at him sorta. Knew he was coming out with an album entitled that & then basicaly made it his own after he recorded it.

Get of fmy guitar..nasty bitch...SHOCKADELICA....

He also took at stab at him in "Raspberry Beret"

"Old Man JOHNSON"S Farm" is refering to Jesse.

Whoa! Really? That's very interesting! Had no clue. Well, discover things everyday. So how's his music? Just curious...

It was at a Jesse Johnson concert in 88 that I first hooked up with someone who gave my a pristine copy of The Black Album...Jesse was bad!!! I wanna be your man baby, oh,oh,oh...Or the Minneapolis classic-"It's a free world and it's mine"...That song is the jam...Aloha~

If ure lookin to pick up anything by Jesse, buy the first album, Jesse Johnson's Revue. Excellent, pure Minneapolis funk. I also have Shockadelica, and one other, can't think of the name, it was his 3rd album. None struck me as being equal to Revue. I just recently bought the Essential Jesse Johnson.....not that impressed with it. I felt Revue was much better, yet they only used 3 or 4 songs from it.

That being said, I doubt this line refers to Jesse. It's about Shockadelica who is described variously throughouth the song as a witch, a temptress, etc. SHE is the one "who be layin on my guitar."



I also doubt that this is a stab at Jesse... "Old Man Johnson" is a generic phrase, a kind of cliche... and it's no more specific than "my boss was Mr. McGhee."

I think you're reading too much into the whole Jesse thing.

Mr McGee comes from the Joni Mitchell song, "Paprika Plains", which refers to "McGee's general store".

"Every Shade of Love" was the name of Jesse Johnson's 3rd album.

Didn't he also have an album titled "Bare My Naked Soul" or something like that??

Tower music usually has in stock a "best of" cd by Jesse Johnson. It's kinda expensive in Tower, but it's worth having, especially for "Can you help me?" & "Free world"..
"Fools paradise" is also good, a few others whose titles escape me at the moment..


Jesse was basically a ROCK lead guitarist in a FUNK band.
Very talented, sort of a "renegade"..

I wish for &
PRAY
that he & Terry & Jimmy Jam will get back with The Time
1 MORE TIME
& do a tour..

but alas, that's not likely to happen...

***"She(I Can't Resist)"----the funkiest thing on the album!! This song kicks ass!! The groove is ferocious,and it was released as the second single.

***"Crazay"(with Sly Stone)---irresistible funk jam.Isn't it a shame that Prince was never able to collaborate with Sly?

***"Burn You Up"---Minneapolis funk at it's best

***"Addiction"---"All I wanna do is keep your body hot....all you gotta do is please don't stop,no"

***"Change Your Mind"---the opening track sets the tone for all that is to follow

***"Tonight"---a nice,romantic love ballad

I remember when I was 2 or 3 years old, I played the Love Struck 12'' to DEATH!!!

I highly doubt that the original members of The Time will get back together, but I have heard that they've had a couple of sessions at The Park, so who knows.

"Jesse Johnson's Revue" is a kick ass album, he plays the fuck out of the lead guitar! Very funky! I got a chance 2 see him promoting that very album, back in the day, and the show was incredible! Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, Sheila E. showed up, did some percussion...slammin'.

He also co-wrote with Prince and Morris on a couple o' tunes on the "Ice Cream Castles" album and a few others, I think.

He was in and out of the band a couple of times...then in the early 90's attempted suicide with a gun (I think it was more of an act of attempt...as they were able 2 talk him out of it)...it was on the news, quickly brushed under the rug, and blamed on alcohol problems. That's the last I heard of Jesse...hope things r cool now.
