Vinyl Digs and "Big Black CD" Shopping

I got so tired of going to the record store and never finding what I want so last Saturday, I went shopping for "big black CDs". This is what I came back with:

Amii Stewart - Knock On Wood

I had the single version of "Knock On Wood" but I had been looking forever for the album. I love the extended drums and "knocking" at the beginning and end of this song. Another song I like on the album is "Light My Fire/137 Disco Heaven".

Isaac Hayes - Don't Let Go

I also already had the single version of "Don't Let Go" but I wanted the long version. I love it when it breaks down and goes....don't let go...don't let go. Another one I like on the album is "Fever".

Tata Vega - Try My Love

I've been looking for the song "I Just Keep Thinking About You Baby" for years and now I have it. I'm going to have to listen to this album a little more for the rest of the tracks.

LaToya Jackson - LaToya Jackson

I remember seeing LaToya on "Soul Train" back in 1980, so I had to pick this one up for the track "If You Feel The Funk". Some of this album sounds pretty good, which was surprising. I'm going to have to listen to it a little more.

Dolly Parton - Heartbreaker

I don't like country music but Dolly made a disco song back in 1978 called "Baby I'm Burnin". I don't like anything else on the album because it's country, but I had to have this particular track. The track is only 2 minutes and 36 seconds long. I saw the 12 Inch in the store, which was over 4 minutes, but the lady in the store wanted to charge me $20 for it....it was on pink vinyl. I thought to myself...."20 dollars....bitch, you must be crazy". I wasn't willing to pay that price so I got the album instead.

Blowfly - Rapp Dirty/Blowfly's Rapp (X Rated Version) (12 Inch)

I had never heard of this guy before but I kept seeing him all over the org. I took a chance and bought this 1980 12 Inch on TK Records and it turned out to be really great.

Anyway, that's what I got. When was the last time you went "big black CD" shopping and what did you come home with?

I went to a used record store the other day and bought several vinyl albums...

Aretha Franklin 'Let Me In Your Life'(1974)---I used to hear this album all the time when I was a kid.The big hits are "I'm In Love" and "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)".Love those songs! On "I'm In Love",Aretha hits a note so high,it gives me chills.

Earth Wind and Fire 'Spirit'(1976)---Yes,I already have all their CDs,but I just wanted a vinyl copy for the hell of it (lol). This is one of their best album covers too,and the lyrics are included in the sleeve.

Roberta Flack 'Blue Lights In The Basement'(1977)---The opening track "Why Don't You Move In With Me" is one of my favorite songs by Roberta. This album also includes "The Closer I Get To You",the hit duet with Donny Hathaway.

Donna Summer 'Walk Away'(1980)---this is nothing more than a simple hits compilation with nothing rare or unusual. But because it never appeared on CD,it's a collector's item if you're a Donna fan.It was released by Casablanca at a time when Donna was starting over with a new company (Geffen).

The Commodores 'Movin On'(1975)---in the weeks leading up to last Christmas,I went shopping and found most of the Commodores 70s albums on vinyl. Finally,I found 'Movin On' so I now have all their albums. This album contains funk jams like "Gimme My Mule",the hit ballad "Sweet Love" and a sublime instrumental "Cebu".

All of these records are in mint condition, and I paid about $2.00 for each album (Roberta and Donna's albums were only $1.00).

You got lucky. There is only one used record store down here and it is on the outskirts of town, in a small "college town" about 30 miles away so I don't go that often. They used to have prices like $3 and $4 dollars on albums until the owner got that damn catalog she keeps looking in and coming up with rediculous prices.

There used to be a comic book store that sold used records, right here in the city, but they got busted for selling bootlegs.

There's a salvage store that also has records. I got the Jill Jones album, still sealed, for 50 cents. I like coming across places where they don't know what they have and sell them for cheap. The best deal I ever found was at a flea market that was run by a Vietnamese couple. They had a whole crate of R&B records that some DJ had sold them and they were selling the albums for 25 cents each. I racked up that day. Several of the albums had the word "Finesse" written across the front in black majic marker. RealFiness that wasn't you was it? lol

You better pick it up soon. I only saw one copy in my area last weekend and a few months ago, they had about 5 or 6. People seem to be buying Rick's used albums more now that he's gone. I noticed that crazy ass woman had also raised the prices on his stuff. lol

I know you like "Hollywoood" and "Spacey Love", so you're going to love the slow jam "Love In The Night". "Come Into My Life" from that album is the song that first got me hooked to Rick James.
