"Street Songs" vs. "Parade" With all the vs. threads between Prince and Michael Jackson going around, I decided to start one on with Prince's real rival, Rick James. I know both albums were released in different years and eras but I wanted to make the battle between two albums that many people consider each artist's best work. I could have used "Purple Rain" but that would be too easy.
Anyway, which is it for you....."Street Songs" or "Parade"? I choose "Street Songs" by FAR. [Edited 4/9/05 7:27am] Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah but alot of people don't think Parade is P's best work.
I do. So, Parade. | |

Street Songs in a Motown minute. Parade is prince's most overrated album among his fans. If it were Street Songs vs. Purple Rain, it'd a much closer match

What kind of contest is this? You really can't compare the two. But since I'm the bigger Prince fan (even though I've been grooving to "Ghetto Life" a lot lately), I'm going with Parade. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Yes and Yes I think they're both defining pieces of their respective artist's career.

Parade was hella garbage. God was I upset when I bought the record home, I was too young and expected PR, but still the albuum is not so great. Street Songs pisses all over it.
Rick lost it after Glow.

Rick lost it after Glow. You ain't lying! A lot of people on this site think the sun rose and set on Prince's ass when he made "Parade" but I see it as one of his weakest albums of the 1980s. Some of the "fams" next door at the "Prince: Music and More" side would be taking their blood pressure medicine if they were reading this. I think Rick James fell off beginning with the "Glow" album and really fell off with "The Flag" album. That's one of the reasons I paired up "Parade" with "Street Songs". Prince became too comfortable when he made "Parade" and I would have loved to see him have some real competition at the time like Rick James. "The Flag" was out during the time of "Parade" and that Rick James album couldn't compete with anything. Andy is a four letter word.

So true. I think a lot of them have it on the wall as a shrine. If it were Street Songs vs. Purple Rain, it'd a much closer match.
True, but that would be too easy. Plus, I think a lot of people pretend to love "Parade" to fit in because so many other people praise it. That's why I posted it in the "Music: Non-Prince" section, to get honest answers. I don't think "Parade" is "all that" and wanted to see how it would do competing against "Street Songs". One of the songs on that album was 17. THAT was Rick's final masterpiece. And it was also that song that made me love the sounds of the Yamaha DX7 Synthesizer. you know what's odd about this thread? Just the other day,I was thinking that a perfect thread would be 'Street Songs' Vs. 'Controversy'.Both albums were released in 1981.

I didn't care much for Parade. With the exception of Anotherlover..., it was bottomless. Sure, it had some nice melodies and showed that Prince had grown and expanded as an artist, but Street Songs was FUNKY AS HELL and had a drive throughout it that is undeniable. So, my answer: RICK JAMES, BITCCCHHH!!!
