I was only in the building for about 10 minutes, and I went down! "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

HamsterHuey said: They started jamming over the DJ's groove and then the DJ took off the record and the band took over, even though the DJ kept adding great touches throughout the entire set. The entire performance was amazing. The band invoked the spirit of John Coltrane's and Miles Davis' music; I am a huge Jack Johnson fan (the Miles Davis album) and it felt like the band was channeling that spirit. I felt priviliged to be part of that spirit. Sounds like a great show. Best, how Prince can turn to jazz and seems an imitator, but Meshell seems to channel the spirit of the people they both adore.
The reason in a nutshell is because, as far as Jazz is concerned, he IS an imitator whereas Ms. Meshell has had formal training in the Jazz idiom. Not that formal training is a necessity, but you have to actually play in the genre for a good period of time before you can hope to obtain any real proficiency. I told some people I think this is the kind of DJ/band interaction Prince can only dream of, just as the entire performance to me is what I would have liked Xpectation to have been and what N.E.W.S. only was at certain times.
N.E.W.S. was a disapointment on a certain level because there was no real serious interaction between the players (not their fault possibly as Renato Neto is a very good Latin Jazz player and Blackwell has Jazz chops also). It always sounded like the musicians were never allowed to "cut loose" if you will. The improvisation and musicians playing off of and reacting to each other in real time is what creates the spontaneity which is so important to certain forms of real Jazz. It's inspiring to hear that Meshell is able to have a career playing this kind of music. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Jahi Sundance Lake.. related to Gene Lake? Wasn't he a drummer for Meshell?
New album in May? I'm gonna faint.. If she did the show at Paradiso, I may be able to watch it on fabchannel!!! Yay! I watched the Rahsaan Patterson show live that way, and his DJ was awesome too. Or maybe it's just the paradiso house dj that's so good.

LoL I told Aksel that this is what the NPG would sound like if Prince didn't keep 'm as tight as he does. I know about Neto and Blackwell, know they have jazz roots. I told Aksel this [Meshell's sound] was what Prince was aiming for when he hired those two.

I told Aksel this [Meshell's sound] was what Prince was aiming for when he hired those two. if Prince would only give his musicians the space & time do improvise a little more on stage like Meshell did with her bandmates at this show, magical things could happen. The coolest thing was that Meshell did not perform as a bandleader, nobody did. This wasn't her concert, it was the concert of this band and she was in this band! Prince could never do that, I think.....

In other words: if Prince could lay aside his ego, it could really happen!
