1984, man.
There was so much music released that year it is mind-boggling! I could be writing all day about the music and the vibe of that year. "haters wanna hate/lovers wanna love/I don't even want/none of the above/I want to piss on you/yes I do/I wanna pee you..."

916 you picked a great year, but to not include 1999?
Also, I thought "What Time Is It" was released in'81. I could be wrong. To answer your question, it's real hard for me to decide that question, but it appears to me that 1988 was a great one, if only for these reasons: Lovesexy It Takes a Nation of Millions . . . I had a copy in Nov of 82. But I was in a DJ poole at the time so I used to get a lot of stuff early. So I wasn't sure if the official release date was 82 or 83. If it was 82, then it just caps off the list of a great year in music [Edited 4/6/05 13:15pm] Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Some good shit in 84, but that's also around the time stuff started to sound a little "empty". You heard less real bass in music with more acts using Moog and other synth bass sounds. Things just seemed a little less funky then. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

for purely personal reasons, 1987 was my favorite year for music. it was the first year that i really really dug into different kinds of music that i'd never listened to before. it was the year i bought every single album by david bowie and heard most of them for the first time. it was the year i discovered the cure and it was the year of playing love & rockets' 'earth sun moon' over and over and over and over again. it was when i discovered sex pistols and B52s and all kinds of cool stuff. i believe world party's 'private revolution' album came out in '87, which is one of the best prince albums never recorded by prince.
and, of course, it was the year 'sign 'o' the times' came out, and that was freakin' phenomenal in itself.

I ended up picking 1979, because of the cross-section of music I was hearing, I just coming out of grade school; seemed like the last big party before the Reagan Era crept in...:

Music was never the same after 1984.The industry changed forever as well.Bruce, Prince, and Madonna changed the course of how music would be presented, listened to, determined forever. What a triumverate. It was our summer of love, but lasted all year.

Bad is so plastic compared to 1987. Its emabrrassing with it next to such other authentic music.

Bad is so plastic compared to 1987. Its emabrrassing with it next to such other authentic music. Not a fan of MJ, eh? I'll give you that Bad is different from the rest but not by any means worse. Musically, it can't compete with Guns N' Roses, Prince and U2, but I happen to like this album and Michael's songwriting on it, and I can excuse the somewhat weaker production (yes, what was Quincy thinking?) because the songs are the shit.

Quite the opposite.I'm a huge fan. But Bad, while good for a MJ record, doesn't deserve mention with the other releases of 1987. So you basically agree with my intial statement about Bad then.

DiamondGirl said: Quite the opposite.I'm a huge fan. But Bad, while good for a MJ record, doesn't deserve mention with the other releases of 1987. Then we'll just have to disagree, because I think Bad was a monumental release of that year and it does deserve to be mentioned. DiamondGirl said: So you basically agree with my intial statement about Bad then. Initial statement of what, plastic sounding or embarrasing? If it was embarrasing, I wouldn't include it in my favourite albums, would I? Like I said, musically, synthesizers can't compete with what I stated there, it's Michael's evolved songwriting why I like this album.
