What are your (MJ's cock*) favourite Bop, and Bop-Guitar albums? (MJ's cock*) Anyone dig this? tA?
I've only just started plundering. Naturally, this was my first... ...I so adore this set now. Salt Peanuts is FUNK. (MJ's cock*) And ofcourse I'm trying to hunt this down... ...really eager to hear this. I'm a guitarist and I'm really keen to learn how it's been done on the instrument before I attempt to mess it up myself, so I've gotten meself dis: And the absolute creme de la creme.... (MJ's cock*) This CD has been in my walkman continuously for the last 2 weeks. I'm transcribing Clockwise. Any more pointers? [* copyright Number23 Humor Inc.] [Edited 4/6/05 12:53pm] ..... these are two of my favorites, from Wes:
actually, two of my favorite Bop guitar records from the 80's: a lot of people who only know him from 'The Tonight Show' would be surprised how Bad a cat Kevin is on the guitar...and he plays like Wes -- No Pick! and on acoustic, he's been compared to John Mclaughlin and Paco de Lucia! ... In terms of guitar, one should probably start with...
...Charlie Christian Although not the best comp, I keep... ...The Original Guitar Hero in the car at all times. (Bargain bin score) Years ago I used to have this one of the Columbia comps (Solo Flight - complete recordings or something like that) that I acquired from one of those old Columbia House record clubs. 1/10 gram vinyl! I played it so much that after about a year you could see through the record. The 1st Jazz guitar I heard was... ...The Johnny Smith Quartet Amazing playing. His playing is not 100% bop but I think you'd dig it. The easiest way to find this now, is via this all inclusive (albeit expensive) boxset... ...The Complete Roost Johnny Smith Small Group Sessions The Johnny Smith Quartet recording is the 3rd CD in the set. Of course there's Wes... Consider dropping this into your Benson collection... ...Ready And Able on the remastered version will pin your ears back! You've already picked some goodies and Pali's given some good suggestions (as usual). I'd also add something from the following players in your guitar list... Barney Kessel Kenny Burrell Pat Martino Freddie Green (more for rhythm playing ) Mike Stern Grant Green (more groove than bop) I'll augment this list as I have time if you like. Btw, your subject line got my attention but it made me almost ignore the thread. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. You thieving bastard, Taureau. Stealing a man's jokes is like stealing his woman and killing his parents.

How could I forget Wes!?! I don't own any Wes so I've no idea how firm the comparisons with Benson are grounded. Will check him out for sure. actually, two of my favorite Bop guitar records from the 80's:
Kevin Eubanks a lot of people who only know him from 'The Tonight Show' would be surprised how Bad a cat Kevin is on the guitar...and he plays like Wes -- No Pick! and on acoustic, he's been compared to John Mclaughlin and Paco de Lucia! To me Joe Pass sounds almost like a bop version of John or Paco. I might have to pass on that finger work though Thanks for the tips pali!

I played it so much that after about a year you could see through the record. This is the very collection I've got my eyes on! Bit expensive but it's supposed to be the most comprehensive and the remastering's supposed to be diamond. I'm ashamed to say that I haven't explored this man yet. I think he's more swing but really this is where it all started I guess before folks starting transcribing Dizzy et al. The 1st Jazz guitar I heard was...

Haven't heard of him but I will check this out, thanks. Of course there's Wes...
Ok don't rub it in I just started with Benson because I already owned/enjoyed Breezin'. did I just admit that? Consider dropping this into your Benson collection...
...Ready And Able on the remastered version will pin your ears back! EXCELLENT, I know for a fact they have this down the store.
Actually someone did recommended to me Grant Green's Am I Blue... reckoned it's pretty funky as well. You guys have given me more than enough homework. Thanks a lot man Btw, your subject line got my attention but it made me almost ignore the thread.
I appologise for that tackiness There are some very sordid bad influences lurking around these parts. I guess the merit of stuff round here ain't that bad, but I'd love it if a bop thread could be as appreciated as a thread about a pop-stars nether's because it definitely makes me drool just as much.
