well ya'll... i got tickets. i actually got them from ticketmaster today, they must have released some. I was shocked!! they were great seats too. some friends of mine who got them in the pre-sale were up in the balcony, and we were on the floor 15 rows back. it was awesome smile

the show was great, the looked and sounded fantastic, and the Beekeeper stuff is really wonderful live. She did a cover of Madonna's Like a Prayer tonite, that i think tori fans will remember for a while smile

That is awesome news Chris. I wish you could make it to Detroit to go with us. I want to thank you again for the review of Beekeeper you wrote ~ it was before the U.S. release and was so well done and enthusiastic that it provided huge excitement for what was to come. Have fun at Duran Duran! I was thinking last night what a great year this will be for me too (as far as concerts go) ~ Tori with a piano next week, Ani DiFranco for the first time in July and Dead Can Dance (who are reuniting for a tour and album) in October. Now if Bjork and David Sylvian would perform near me it would be perfection!

thanks for the kind words smile I'm really looking forward to Duran Duran tomorrow night... i've never seen them before, so it should be a real treat!

wonderful performance of "orange knickers"...i love this song solo, just her and her piano, especially when she feels the high note!

and i'm not even gonna comment on the kid from fat albert calling the new album "the beefkeeper."

I really like the solo version of that song too. Both of them really. I wish she was having singles for this album. It'd be a great place to put solo rerecordings or live stuff like this.

lol The Beefkeeper? Who said that?

I really like the solo version of Orange Knickers too but Ive grown to love the duet. Damien Rice adds a grandfatherly warmth to the song. Its a nice enhancement but it took me a while to appreciate. nod

For some reason, the Power of Orange Knickers seems to be the only Tori song I don't like. The lyrics bug me.

Carson let his other guest announce Tori. He's the one who screwed up. Carson made sure to correct him.

And I love the album version too. One of my faves. At first I had trouble with it. Many times I don't like octave harmonies. But now I love his presence in the song.

Its her vocals on that song that I don't like, she doesn't sound like herself, she sounds drunk or something.
I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

I don't like the terrorist line. Seems way overused by the media. I go to Tori for something deeper than that.

That's why she tackled the word. She talks about it in some recent interviews. I like how she handled the subject.

"I started to think about the word terrorist. It's a word you hear several times a day now. I started to think about what being a terrorist can mean in different situations. I wanted to explore the realm of personal invasion. Now this would be an invasion by someone you know personally, not a stranger. We all know about strangers being filled with hatred -- strangers who lash out against a government or an ideal. As a result, this stranger kills innocent people, tragically, people you may know personally. But when there is an intimacy between two people and one person starts to feel invaded by the other person, that is personalized terrorism. As we all know, the battleground between two lovers, or two friends, or two coworkers can be vicious. Painful. Heartbreaking. And bloody. I started to think about the weapons that might be used in this kind of battle, and as I kept digging for an answer, I stumbles into the Realm of Assonance. I started to think, Okay, what is the paradox of the terrorist? And Assonance, that beautiful creature, came to my aid and whispered, 'Kiss.' And sure enough, we have all felt invaded by a lingering kiss, for good or ill. But I had to find terrorism not just in a relationship of a couple -- representing two divided Beings -- but within one Being. After all, isn't that the ultimate discovery, the ultimate pain -- division within the self, the soul from the body, the mind from the heart, wisdom from consciousness, the addiction from the cure, the two Marys . . . divided? The lyrics started to come to me quickly..." [Tori Amos: Piece by Piece]

"I've just finished a song on my new album called 'The Power Of Orange Knickers' and the word that came up was 'terrorist'. Tricky one! What rhymes with 'terrorist'? Assonance is your best friend here. I thought about how people are using that word right now - whether it's people who run kingdoms or are killing people, or both. Maybe it could mean domestic terrorism, somebody you let in your house or your room or your body - invasion! Then I put the word 'kiss' in there to create a paradox as it's the furthest thing from 'terrorist'. I've always been a John Lennon person. My husband is a Paul McCartney person but I love a twist in the story. I love the tension of opposites. I love dancing with the devil - but the devil's a dictionary, not a dick!" [Word (UK) - February 2005]

Says Amos, "This album is exploring relationships."

In The Power of Orange Knickers, a duet with Irish crooner Damien Rice, the two sing over one another, their voices mingling in the sweeping, piano-led chorus. In the song, Amos writes of sensuality and jealousy, using political metaphors to explore the politics of romantic relationships, as in the loaded lyric, "Can somebody tell me/Who is this terrorist?"

"I was curious about how people were defining what a terrorist was," Amos explains. "[I wanted to] undress the word and really crawl inside the definition of it . . . People are using it to get the masses to agree with their agendas . . . [But] it can be a little pill that you're addicted to, or a person. And sometimes, for a woman, it's another woman." Not at the moment. But see, I haven't had a chance to closely study many of her lyrics. I listen to her music at work (don't even own any of her albums myself) so I've come upon Tori passively and subconsciously. She's sort of creeped into my system and wreaked havoc. I don't really know what any of her songs are about or why she wrote them. I just respond to them viscerally and love it. That's why that song doesn't work for me, it jumps out at me too much and makes me think in a way that doesn't feel good. But if I look deeper into the lyrics I might appreciate the song more. Not sure I'll like it though.

Ah. Gotcha.

Yeah, she's a tricky one. I think a lot of people assume her lyrics are stream-of-consciousness nonsense or pretentious babbling, but there are a lot of layers to what she's singing about. I find that her choruses are the part that identify the emotion and meaning of her songs. Those are usually the easy part. Reading what she's said about each song usually makes a huge difference for me. If you decide to start buying her albums, I would highly recommend toriphoria for all of your Tori research needs. wink

I write poetry too and I really identify with Tori's lyric style. Usually I can slip right in to her songs, but some take more "research" than others. I always prefer art that doesn't "make sense".

Yeah, lyrics are usually the least important element to me. Music, melody and voice always come first. But with people like her and Bowie, I find that I have to dig deeper into the lyrics. They're so abstract on the surface, but so rewarding once I do a bit of decoding.
