70s Disco Album of the day: 'We Are Family' by Sister Sledge (1979)

After finishing a book about Chic,I am now going through a "Chic phase".I'm not only listening to all of their recordings,I've been playing the amazing stuff that Niles Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced for other artists.Without question, their strongest work (outside of Chic) is Sister Sledge's 1979 album 'We Are Family'.I've said it before and I'll say it again: this album is superior to Chic's own 'Risque' album, which was released later in '79.This is a strong, consistent 8-song set in which every song is superb and memorable. The opener "He's The Greatest Dancer" simply dazzles the listener with its' irresistible groove, lush strings and vivid lyrics. The next track "Lost In Music" is very intoxicating and of course, the hit title track is one of those enduring anthem hits that will never die. There are two nice ballads too---"Somebody To Love" and "You're A Friend To Me"---and a song that many people feel should have been the fourth single, the breezy"Thinking Of You",which lead singer Kathy Sledge considers her favorite song on the album. The last track "One More Time"is lovely....a gentle, midtempo number that ends too soon.I would liked for this song to go on forever!

biggrin That's my favorite track too!!I love the interplay between Bernard's Bubbling bass and Nile's joyous rhythym guitar, with Kathy Sledge's vocals soaring on top of the whole thing....Beautiful!! cloud9 music

...and yeah, Everybody Dance was a Great Book, by the way!! Long overdue....

I went through the SAME thing when I finished the book. For like two weeks, I listened to nothing but Chic and stuff produced by Nile Rodgers. As for WE ARE FAMILY, total underrated masterpiece. And it IS better than RISQUE. If you listen to a lot of the breaks in these songs (like "Greatest Dancer", and Chic's own "Le Freak" and "I Want Your Love,") it's mind-boggling (by today's standards) how tight they (the Chic players) were as a unit, and it was all recorded LIVE!

Get the CD! It was remastered in the mid-90s with several bonus tracks (remixes of "Lost In Music" and "We Are Family").

The extended album version of "We Are Family" is a must-have! Kathy sounds as if she's REALLY getting caught up in the rapture of it all (lol),at one point, she sounds like she's losing her voice.
