Music was a huge part of my mother's childhood. Everyone in the family played an instrument and they were part of a well-known vocal group at the time. They can harmonize like nobody's business. She grew up liking stuff like Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, The Everly Bros., and Johnny Mathis. She then moved on to Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, Elton John and Linda Rondstadt in the 70's. She became a born again Christian in the early 80's and kind of left behind all of her secular favorites. It wasn't until my teenage years, and a lot of struggle that she started liking some of what I listened to. Now... Bowie, Prince and Annie Lennox are her new favorites.
My dad didn't have such a musical childhood. He had it pretty rough as a kid and they were actually homeless for awhile. But in his college years, he really discovered jazz. His favorites were Nina Simone, Cleo Lane, and some other female jazz vocalists. He had a non-musical period for many years also, but not because of religion. He mostly listened to talk radio on his way to and from work and nothing else. One day, I was watching a bootleg of Bjork's Unplugged and he kind of got slowly sucked in. He was like, "she's got a lot of jazz influence in her music". After that, I bought him all her cd's and he was hooked. So cool.

Mom & dad put the music of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Ella, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Brook Benton, Nat King Cole etc. in our baby bottles. Funny how music literally becomes a part of U!

Eventhough my parents are older now they are still pretty progressive. They pretty much listen to the same stuff I listen too. In my house, I was expoused to all kinds of music while growing up b/c my parents had diverse interest in music and with age that hasn't changed till this day. So in my parent house you may hear some jazz, celtic, new age jazz, rock, funk, country, gospel, and folk music. [Edited 4/5/05 20:06pm]

My parents mostly listen to country.
When my mom was younger she was really into Elvis and the Beatles. I'm not sure what my dad used to like when he was younger.

My dad played lead guitar and fronted a band for many years. His thing is "country-rock", sort of rockabilly/blues type stuff on the line of Jerry Lee Lewis or George Thoroughgood.
