Granted, she looks great but she has no substance left and nothing interesting to show us that we haven't all seen before.

the sad thing is that i think she does have substance left, she is just choosing to keep her voice down (maybe out of fear, maybe not). 1814 and velvet rope and even parts of janet. gave janet a voice. those records gave her a personality, a cause, a care, a point. what is she trying to say with all for you and damita jo? what...she likes to fuck? ok. cool. so do i. and now what? i recently watched the interview with oprah (back from TVR era) and oprah asked why janet isn't still speaking on social ills and concerns like she did with 1814. janet's response was that she already did her record on social problems and that she's now making new statements. she went on to say that she still feels passionately about those issues but she can't keep making records about it. so, what, she chooses instead to repeat herself in the realm of sexuality instead? it makes no sense to me. that interview was about 10 years ago and janet has not moved anywhere. to be honest - and y'all know i love her to death - she's made steps backwards. at least the sexuality on tvr was often implicit and, i think, tastefully done. the last two records dealt with sex in a very slutty way. it lacks the respect and dignity that was shown in much of tvr.

i am not at all suggesting that janet disregard any of her sexual impulses or identity nor am i suggesting that she can't be sexy at 40. it would be a preposterous request to ask her to become asexual. it is not absurd, however, to suggest that she demonstrate sexuality AND responsibility. sex is fun and sex is great but sex has some disastrous consequences if not handled responsibly.

after all, in "state of the world", wasn't janet singing about the teen mother who struggles to feed her child?

i love janet. i mean, i looooove me some janet damita jo miss jackson if ya nasty!

but even i'm tired of seeing ol' girl throw her titties and ass in my face. it was cool when i was 16 and rebellious. it was cool when i was 21 and thought it was "a statement." i'm almost 30 now...janet's even older...and its just not cool anymore. add to that the fact that back in the day airbrushing was not needed. the same can't be said today. i have no doubt her ass is wonderful but nobody's - and i mean nobody's - ass looks like that without some post production work. so, here's my theory: if you feel you need to airbrush or artificially enhance your assets before publishing them in a magazine, don't show your assets. period.

i love damita jo (its one of my faves) and i enjoyed all for you. honestly, though, its getting harder and harder for me to take cds like 1814 and velvet rope seriously when, unfortunately, i begin to see janet as a one dimensional caricature of herself. its fine if you want to talk about your sexuality but if its the only way to present yourself to the public i begin to think that its the only way you see yourself - as a piece of sex.

that is a terrible way to show yourself to the world.

Agreed.Janet has become a one-dimensional artist. It's as if her only message these days is: I love sex,I love orgasms, and I love showing off my body. This was cool back in 1993,but now that she's approaching 40,you would think that she would have something more substantial to offer. How silly would Madonna look if she was still doing the whole 'Erotica' thing.....posing nude, constantly talking about her sex life, and writing numerous songs about getting laid? It gets tired after awhile.Prince and Madonna were once very sleazy, but they evolved, matured and moved on.Janet needs to do the same.

First of all, David said 'orgasms'. giggle

Second, I totally agree with every word you said.

But here's the key.....

Janet is still sexy. Nothing wrong with using what you got while you still got it. Seriously, Madonna couldn't pull that off if she wanted to at this point.

I feel you. But, to me, sexy is imagining what someone looks like without their clothes on. Janet's being sexual and it's not the same thing to me.

Madonna looks stank in that pic up top with her legs behind her head. Sorry David. redface

Too me sexy is only part visual. But since I don't know any of these people that's the only part of it I have to go on. But really, why does maturity = less sexual? And why does sexual = less compelling music. They really don't and neither has anything to do with the other. Janet still looks great. A lot of us still like looking at her but that doesn't mean her music will be any better or worse. Folks make too much out of nothing.

many people are saying that janet's sexy image IS a reflection of the music she makes. what many janet fans and non fans are claiming is that the music has been caught up in this sexy image. if janet was just looking sexy and half naked but her recent music had substance, i don't think anyone would be complaining or making the comments they are. the problem is that the music does, indeed, lack substance and many feel as though she's relying on her sexy image far too much. i suppose it all comes down to personal preferences. i would personally love for janet to make an intelligent statement on her next record rather than just another attempt at soft porn in the guise of sexual exploration. even better if she looks hot as hell in the process.

Exactly...
Janet was sexy during the early 90s and she still managed to pull off "Janet" which is my favorite album of hers.

During the Velvet Rope era she showed off her nipple ring but still managed a kickass album too.

She was being sexy and concentrating on her creative side as well.

But as of All For You and beyond she has focused on her sexy image more than she has her music.
Showing ass is nice, but i'd prefer Janet to show more potential in her work, and I know she has the abilty to do so. Sex doesn't always sell.
