"Purple Rain" by far. Michael can't seem to do anything without guests on his albums. Apollonia was a guest on "Purple Rain" but at least she was unknown. [Edited 4/3/05 14:21pm] Andy is a four letter word.

You'd say anything for the shock effect, wouldn't you? Even lie. Sad bastard. I'd pick the crotch bumpin' grind of Darling Nikki and Computer Blue over ANYTHING from Thriller EVERYTIME. Also, Prince could be sissy and still be masculine. I never bought that from the Jackson camp. The choice between showmanship and craftmanship is easy, the gap between them so huge Michael Jackson could not even cross over with EVERY fantasy he constructed around the non-excistence of his personality. Purple Rain. Cuz it dared to create instead of imitate. Gimp!

So you're asking me on www.PRINCE.org which album I prefer, Prince or MJ?
Give me a break man. Purple Rain by far. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

This question again? I love Thriller but Purple Rain is by far a better album. Nothing on Thriller can match the brillance of When Doves Cry. Period. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Well, this IS the Other Music forum. Some people that prowl here aren't even Prince fanatics.

I think this is kind of a no-brainer for me. Both are great albums but Thriller's importance is almost entirely commercial. Purple Rain may be one of the only albums in history that was deliberately commercial and yet not artistically compromised, IE he wanted to make himself a superstar but he didn't have to sell out to do it. On Thriller, almost all the songs are great, but the album is way too poppy in general and way too conciliatory to every possible demographic, it just isn't as edgy or as artistically accomplished as Purple Rain, which is a pretty good characterization of the difference between Prince and MJ's career. MJ always shows glimpses of true genius and stylistic experimentation, but he always seems too preoccupied with making something everyone will love. Purple Rain is as danceable and funky as Thriller (excepting billie jean and startin' somethin' which are fantastically ageless dance songs)but it rocks much harder, conveys much more varied and deeper emotions and styles, and has more innovative twists like the songs that transform halfway through, and the genre-bending moments that defy classification (and computer blue which does both). Also, Purple Rain is much more of an accomplishment because, credited and uncredited creative input from wendy and lisa notwishstanding, prince was involved in if not in total control of almost every aspect of making this album from singing, writing, producing and playing. Michael co-produced, wrote only half the songs, and played almost no instruments. [Edited 4/3/05 17:44pm]

Purple Rain is a better flowing album though
Sunset Driver could easily replace shit like Baby Be Mine. [Edited 4/5/05 2:40am]

Purple Rain!
Prince does it all, great music, great blend of rock, soul, funk, great lyrics. Thriller, very good album, but what if Quincy didn't produce the thing? Where would Mj be without him?
