MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO

Okay, let's just cut to the chase she is the bomb - her lyrics and music are absolutely captivating, challenging and way from the mainstream. She is an awesome bass player, and her development has been similar to that of Prince in terms of changing musical styles and now moving more over into classic jazz.

I am due to see her live, at the Jazz Cafe London and am wondering who else has seen her live and / or heard any live recordings of her???? I would be interested in live reviews etc....

I have heard the track 'Bitterly' live, and it is flawless, and like Prince, she develops it even more live... I am hoping that when I see her t will be and intimate and moving concert... so any views, news or revies welcome!

Thanks. Peace and always remember, We Come 1.

I've seen MeShell twice before and I have to say don't have any expectations. From my experience and from what I've heard about other shows you never know what to expect. At one show she didn't play nearly as much bass as I had hoped and she kind of just stood at the mic doing this funny little dance. Things didn't really start jumping until the end of the concert! At a second show, I didn't recognize any of the music despite having all her albums and soundtrack cuts. It was also very hard to understand what she was saying due to the sound system (altho later other performers sounded fine) So I don't know if she was doing new stuff or what but I was still able to vibe. She can create a sensual groove or have you nodding your head even though you don't know what the hell she's doing. No matter what the music was always tight she just pretty much does what she wants
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I've seen her a couple of times, and the most kick ass show from her was at First Ave (minneapolis). She just tore it up on bass, and the show was really funky. I've also seen her at the North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland) where it was also a great show. I'd rate the First Ave. show in one of the top concerts I've ever been to, by anyone. nod

She played here in Holland again two years ago, and I couldn't go. But all of my friends that went said it was really boring and way too mellow. These are people though that don't like anything unless it's funky, so I probably still would have loved it since I am a big fan of her anyway.

Me'Shell is the best of her generation.

I saw her at a music fest down here in '03, and she took "Fool Of Me" to CHURCH. Y'all hear me? It wasn't a song. It was a prayer.

I also heard "Love Song No. 1" for the first time, and it was incredible.

meshell is great...saw her at the Mavrick launch party for Bitter and was blown away.....saw her give the most awesome performance of "Liliqui Moon" at the Filmore and walked out in tears cause I knew it would never get any better then that...

on the flip side I have been to a couple utterly boring arse concerts of hers where she was uninspiring, boring and acted like she could be anywhere else then where she was...

the last time i saw her was in austin two years ago. i was front and center close enough to stick my hand up her pants. if u are feeling her on disc u will have an orgasmiic feeling experiencing her live. enjoy.....

I was there.....it was not really that the show was boring (she had a kick-ass band with her!), but more that the audience was rude & annoying for just not shutting up! That is what ruined the gig, the crowd kept on talking and you could see that she & the band were annoyed by it! Also, Meshell was not feeling too well that night.

I'm seeing her again in Amsterdam next week.....don't know what to expect, somehow I am having trouble digging her jazz-record, 'Dance Of The Infedel'.....at times I find it good, at times I find it utter shit! It doesn't seem to have a groove.....

Good advice to go in not knowing what to expect nod I've seen her 3 times & for the last 2 she primarily sang stuff from projects that hadn't surfaced yet. You have to be open to hearing what you've never heard & experiencing something new. She doesn't disappoint, it's been pretty cool... wink

Maybe I just went on a so-so night. Maybe it was all that strange estrogen in the air. Like her music. Happier with the CD's. Concert didn't blow me away or anything.

eek I didn't know she was playing! I don't know if I'll go because I have a friend visiting from the U.S. that week and I don't know if he'll want to do something that night or not. It's a Saturday right? And who knows, my friends may have already gotten us all tickets. But I doubt it because they were probably the ones who ruined the show last time. lol

Anyone got news on her new release "Dance of the Infidels"? Is it only gonna be available in Europe on April 5?

Meshell is an amzing artist, one that I am longing to see live, but unfortunately never seems to make it around my way.
'Dance Of The Infidel' is going to ba available I think sometime in June for US.
I got my copy last week here in Europe and got to say I am enjoying it.

I have seen her 3 times and each time was completely it's own experience. I couldn't compare any of the three concerts as being anywhere near the same.

The first concert she did Material from Plantation and Peace. She had a full back up band including a horn section. Wendy and Lisa also performed with her that night.

The second concert was 4 months before the release of Bitter and this show was stripped down, very subdued. 4 musicians, including Me'Shell, and they played the entire Bitter album. It was amazing to hear all that new material before hearing the album. It was the most intimate performace of the three.

The third time she played stuff from all albums, including Cookie. It was not as lively as the first but nowhere near as subdued as the second. It was kinda inbetween, more like a musical joint.

Anyway none of these performances were disappointing. You are definitely in for a treat. She knows her craft and she just takes it to another level. She doesn't just play and sing, she makes love through her gift. She is the bomb and one of my all time favorite artist ever. I saw her at an album signing for Comfort Woman and she signed my copy of Peace Beyond Passion to "Supa" biggrin

oh and probably the reason that performance was off par was because the idiots in the audience kept taking pictures of her after they were told that she is an epileptic, she had to leave the stage twice during those episodes, and they threatened to cancel the rest of the show.

I just remembered, she played the red cat in houston last fall, she was listed as the headliner, but was actually sitting in with a jazz - funk -fusion group, that i will considered a truly lackluster performance...so my total is 6 times.
thanks for refreshing my memory

I don't know, but doesn't she have a son from before she got famous??? Also, I forgot about her epilepsy.. Prince said in a song he had 'epilepy until the age of 7'.. I wonder if that has something to do with the size of his head. eek Hmm, I wonder if there is a connection between epilepsy and musical genius... hmm
