The One-man bands As we know, Prince is an outstanding musicians, and a great composer/singer...
But in history of music there were a lot of others artists who played, wrote and produced as a One-man band... Tell me, who's the greatest One-man band of all time ???  | |

Lenny Kravitz and George Michael play all the instruments in their albums...but Prince has to b the best of all of these  | |

i offer that Trent Reznor is an awesome one-man-band...
but Stevie is undoubtedly the "one" [Edited 4/5/05 12:43pm] posture your mandables towards the sky

I have to give it to P as my favorite. Listen to the 12" mixes by him sometime!
I like Paul Mc Cartney's 1st solo CD and Todd Rundgren in the "Hello It's Me" days. Patrice Rushen is great also. And Frank Zappa. A lot a people may not be aware of this but Maurice Gibb did a good amount of the musical backing on the Bee Gees recordings which was responsible for those textures. What I like is Prince puts the same amount of energy into each instrument. My favorite example is "PartyUp". Deserving of wider recongnition would be Roger Troutman. If you're not careful one man band efforts can sound like a guy with a Casio and too much time on his hands. | |

Johnnie Guitar Watson was another. As well as a fave of mine, Shuggie Otis. Lewis Taylor is someone pali and pysko hipped me too and this cat is baaad. I would have to agree with Marrk on this one, when it comes to a one man band i dont think anyone tops the talent, vision, and skill of Stevie Wonder. Even though many talk about his past albums as being his "prime" I dont think Stevie has slowed down at all. His drum techinque is so unique and diverse that its scary!!! Listen to Stevie play the drums on Superwomam (where were you), or Harmonica on St. Louis Blues, his piano chord strcture I'm still trying to figure out. There are many great one man bands, Ray, Sting, Prince, even people I know that we will never here about, like many people on this site. But sadly so far i dont think anyone tops the man that truly is a Wonder!!!!! | |

I've recently discovered a great appreciation for Todd Rundgren, so I'm glad to see him with multiple mentions here. And good call on Paul McCartney's first album. It's a classic (that's desperately in need of a remaster)! | |
