Can someone explain why they think Beck is good? From day one, people have passed this guy of as a big deal. Dust Brothers sound or not, I don’t get why this guy’s music is considered so great. His voice sounds horrible on record.

It's not about his voice. It IS horrible. Vocals aren't the only thing that make a good record. He doesn't care what his record sounds like is his thing I think. He doesn't care about the particulars, just as long as the sound is there, the mix isn't important. His confidence shows thru and makes it good. Have U heard his song "Deborah" for Christsake. CLASSIC.
Prince should do a cover of it by the way. It would be hilarious.

Funny how I seem to enjoy the music of Beck, Bjork and Radiohead, all of
which are infamous for their reportedly "terrible" vocals. I guess it's just an acquired taste. You learn to love the voice more and more as you sink deeper into the incredible tapistry of music that each of them weaves. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Beck sounds like a dilettante just playing with different styles.

The only album I liked of his was Sea Change.
I think Beck, Bjork and Radiohead are often "trendy" artists for the type of people who pat themselves on the back and award themsleves a gold star after listening to a record. [Edited 3/30/05 6:48am]

he makes relatively interesting music, which i like listening too. i never heard mellow gold, but the rest have been great IMO.
and i like his voice too. it's the kinda dopey voice that works equally well when rapping (because it sounds quirky and nerdy) or when he's deep in a bluesy mood. his music has charisma, too.

[Edited 3/30/05 6:48am] That's what happens with such bands. They do the music they do, then people say they're trendy and cutting-edge, then people get annoyed because other people say they're trendy. It doesn't matter, though. Dig it or not.

seriously - for me, an artist is good if they can do three things:
1. have something interesting to say; 2. say it in a way that it insteresting; 3. effectively communicate it live. beck does all three very well. if that makes me a snob or a prick or whatever, i can happily hang with that.

FUN!!!! posture your mandables towards the sky
and oscilate them in an apathetic manner throw your hands in the air and wave 'em like you just don't care

Beck guarantees a ride plain and simple. The man might not have the best voice but he definitely knows how to use it to effect with his music. He's a freaken genius as far as I'm concerned 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Once it's critically acclaimed, they're into it, for that reason alone. See also: Norah Jones. If you dig him, ain't no problem with that. The word often should have signified that I wasn't generalizing to everyone here (although by the looks of it this doesn't seem like the first time you guys have been accused of this ). [Edited 3/30/05 11:28am] it's true - i HAVE been accused of it a lot, and it's frustrating to me. i can't help it. i like what i like, and a lot of what's passed off in the mainstream just doesn't interest me. i was brought up listening to stuff like zappa and the beatles and sly and janis - really colorful, extreme, passionate music by people who were doing new things - and i guess i was just conditioned to like that kind of thing. there's some top 40 stuff i like. it doesn't all have to be arty alternative stuff. but i'm not gonna pretend to like something i don't in order to fit in with the crowd. i only live once (that i'm aware of). i don't have time for that kind of carrying on.
