70s Soul album of the day: 'Life Is A Song Worth Singing' by Teddy Pendergrass (1978)

In July 1978,Teddy Pendergrass (former lead singer of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes) released his second solo album 'Life Is A Song Worth Singing'.Produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff,it quickly caught on with listeners. The album's centerpiece, the lush, sexy"Close The Door",drove the ladies crazy and became a huge hit that summer. It also became Teddy's signature song. But,like the best Gamble and Huff productions, there were numerous other highlights on this album."It Don't Hurt Now" is a powerful, beautifully arranged ballad in which Teddy's vocals soar. The title track is a wonderful Thom Bell-Linda Creed song with a strong message.Teddy can get funky too...the songs "Only You" and "Get Up,Get Down,Get Funky,Get Loose" are some of the funkiest jams to come out of Philly this year. The best is saved for last."When Somebody Loves You Back" is my absolute favorite Teddy Pendergrass song, and it's one of my Top 5 Gamble and Huff compositions. It's a beautiful, uplifting song with a gorgeous melody and arrangement. Those strings are intoxicating.Who can resist these lyrics...

"Oh you're the one who's got me inspired
keep on lifting,lifting me higher
It's so good loving somebody when somebody loves you back, and that's a fact
It's so good needing somebody, when somebody needs you back

Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

nod gotta love that breakdown near the end...

"I'm a grown man....yes I am....I think I can understand....yes I can....
that you didn't mean me no good"

I swear, music doesn't get more soulful and dramatic than this.
