Arrest won't cost 'Idol' finalist
The Associated Press
Scott Savol, one of the remaining nine finalists on American Idol, was once arrested for domestic violence, but the Fox network said the arrest won't cost Savol his shot at becoming an Idol.

Savol, 28, one of nine remaining Idol finalists, was arrested following a 2001 altercation with the mother of his then-infant son.
By Kevin Winter, Getty Images

Although several past contestants have been booted for not disclosing arrests, Savol was "forthcoming to the American Idol producers and the network regarding his misdemeanor" and "the situation did not warrant his disqualification," Fox said in a statement Thursday.

Ohio police documents posted on The Smoking Gun Web site said Savol, now 28, had a confrontation with Michele Martin, the mother of his son, in February 2001. According to a Shaker Heights Police Department report, the couple had decided to separate, but when Savol arrived at Martin's mother's home to collect his belongings, he called Martin "several vulgar names," "pulled an engagement ring off her finger" and "stated he was also going to take their son."

When Martin threatened to call police, Savol shoved her, pulled the phone from her hand and then threw it at her, striking her in the chest and causing the phone to break, the police report said.

Savol pleaded to a reduced misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, was fined $500, ordered to complete an anger management or domestic violence program, placed on a year's probation and sentenced to a suspended 20-day jail term, according to the Web site.

At first I was looking at and thinking nothing was wrong but then I looked under what he was looking for...shocked! I beat he's gonna leave....

BTW,I remeber when my school lab didn't require us signing in and out of the computers that I used to go on computers that had this "Black Planet Love" site as a button but the window wasn't visible. I had no idea what it was...I almost thought it was dirty so I just tried to close it as soon as possible! Some students spenidng time in the computer lab on that kind of site....they should be on Prince.org!

The guy who got arrested is interesting for a few reasons. The first is that he was talking to ET or somebody for an interview and kept saying "They wont find anything on me..." doh! You dumbass! And they kept showing clips of him saying "I have no skeletons in my closet". What is treally intersting, though, is the fact that they got rid of Frenchie for somethig far less! They should be ashamed as all hell!

the point is, they didn't find anything on him and he didn't have any skeletons..... because he was upfront about it with the judges/producers/etc. from the beginning.

Well, how many albums do you think a gay black man is going to sell in this society? Love songs take on a whole new meaning when the audience is repulsed. Ellen wouldn't even book RuPaul for an appearance on her show to promote his last album.

Little Richard did alright.

Look, this should be a good thing, yeah? Or am I just totally out of touch with the politics on this board?

Little Richard did NOT do alright. A little androgyny is a far cry from being totally out of the closet. He didn't admit his sexual desires in the Tutti Frutti years. Elton John is the only gay man to come out and retain the sales and popularity any heterosexual would envy. And the greater acceptance of white culture has also helped him.

actually, he had a very rough go of it for many years after he came out in 1976. he's god the dismal sales to prove it, from 1976-1982, and even beyond that, really, until the early 90's. of course his output also really sucked during much of that time as well.

Wasn't honest with the press, though. Yeah, he'll get away with it because he was honest and that's fine, but don't you think a legal misdemeanor is a whole lot worse, I say, than a woman posing in lingere (apprently, the shots weren't even topless, which "American Idol" tried to suggest they where). Shame on them!

America isn't that progressive (the election showed that). The only gay and out black men that I can think of that had recording careers with some success where Sylvester and Rupaul, and they "came out" at the right time, where both drag queens ("It's not like their gay men...It's fun becuase like their like guys in dresses!") and both did music that appealed mostly to a gay/progressive audience, NOT "American Idol" safe ballads (their first singl is always an over the top power ballad...then maybe they can find their style on their first album).

why does he need to be honest with the press? show me one pop star who's always honest with the press. seems like good practice for him, if you ask me biggrin

Well he just sounded like a dummy. Why would he keep saying he has nothing to hide...I don't think he was just talking about the AI people, I think he was taunting the press. I stil think Frenchie should have won. Is she ever going to make an album? The only person who wasn't the offical American Idol to have any success is Clay Aiken (I think they tried with Diana DeGarmio but I think her album must have tanked but probably not as bad as that Justin guy).

because neither one is really expected to win the whole thing, and since you never REALLY know how the votes turned up, both will probably be gone fairly soon. the AI machine is not gonna pump big $$$ into somebody with potential liabilities, no matter if the general public is forgiving or their transgressions or not. Clay is very likely gay as a picnic basket, but without hard evidence, such as incriminating photos or a duh, webpage just checked this year, millions of clueless young girls will continue to think he is just "sensitive and shy". in scott's case, unfortunately, his mannerisms and dress--e.g., "wanna be urban, tough guy", is gonna bite him in the ass. the only way he could probably salvage the situation is to come out and change his persona up with some nicer outfits and less of the "fake-ass gangsta" attitude

I see what you're all saying, but it's like your rooting for him to fail. From what I've heard, he's got no qualms about being out and on the show -- if he did, he'd have taken that ad down a long time ago. And you're right that he'd not going to win, but that has more to do with his bland singing than anything. I'm just happy there's a proud gay, black man who's made it this far on the show -- every time someone like him operates with class, it does open another door.

Thesmokinggun.com has Scott's whole arrest thingy on there (5 pages worth)...notable tidbits:

listed as 6ft, 270 lbs (big boy)
son's mother is African-American (so he has a bi-racial A-A, son, at least that makes hime a little more credible singing all that R&B wink )

If Clay is gay, a song that poped up on internet radio is appropraite for him then, "In Denial". I'm not sure if he is really gay. He genuinely seems asexual and a southern dandy (some southern guys are just really effemeniate) and some people (mosty girls and women) have embraced that.

If that is the case, good for him. But I seriously doubt the AI people know about this. AI is not only fairly conservative in most aspects of the show (no one has ceratinly been vocally out and on the show) but AI is on Fox! Shit, they made a huge deal about Fantasia being a single mother and I think it's cool she has a song called "Baby Mama" or something (kind of says, "In you face, "liberal" media.).

Luther Vandross is obviously gay even thou' he has never admitted it fully.

I think the general population knows this. If they are not in denial that is.

His career has never really suffered.

Now, I am sure if he came out and told everyone...."house is not a home", "never too much" and "power of love" were written for men. His career would have dropped like a tko from mike tyson.

Tevin Campbell is gayer then a summers day .... and got caught like George Michael in a beverly hills bathroom w/ his pants down...and peeps still can't believe that.

Unfortunately, the black community will find it very hard 2 embrace a openly gay singer. There is a such denial...in addition 2 a dont ask ..dont tell kinda thing going on right now.

The best thing Anwar can do is deny, deny and deny and live his private life ...privately...

Who knows...he may end up being very successful
