Cool that they save Vertigo for the end. And City of Blinding Lights is would make a great opener.

you, my friend, are taking it too far.....the Franz Ferdinand gig we saw together was good, but certainly didn't top any Prince-show I have ever seen! We'll have to see how they will grow, what they'll come up with!

For me, this is a relative thing. The very best Prince shows I've seen are hard to beat. Celebration Night 5 being the highest. But there are many Prince shows I've seen that I wouldn't put anywhere near my tops - New Power Soul, Hit & Run, Celebration Year 2, etc. Maybe I'm spoiled cuz I've seen him so many times, but there are various degrees of enjoyment when it comes to seeing him live. Celebration Night 6 for example...everyone had seen the ONA show the first night. It seemed like most people would've preferred to be out to dinner instead. It's not that it was a terrible performance. It's just that we expect so much from him.

Agreed. Some of the Prince shows I've seen top everything while other concerts easily top other Prince performances.
That being said, my most favorite shows ever not including Prince would have to be the Basement Jax show I saw YEARS ago at First Ave, seeing Radiohead at the Glatonbury Festival, the Pixies at the Fine Line, and my first "real" Cracker show at First Ave, many moons ago also. I"m sure there's a bazillion more I'm forgetting (I've seen a LOT of shows!) but those are the ones I generally put at the top of my list.

My all time favorite show was NOT a Prince show. Seeing Bjork during the Homogenic tour at a festival in Belgium was my all time favorite musical experience.

A handful of other shows have been close to "Prince Level" for me Including Radiohead, Charlatans, Basement Jaxx and Blur.

For me though, it's like apples and oranges. The feelings I have for P's music and performances are so rooted and personal that the Prince Live experience is totally different from just about any other artist I have seen.

in hindsight, i wasn't too excited about those newpowersoul shows. the last hit n' run tour was pretty lame, too. and i won't even get into those horrendous "after shows" from the last tour.

Do you mean the ONA aftershows? eek

no, i was talking about the musicology after shows...specifically, the house of blues in chicago. it was so bad the management even gave me comped tickets to any other HOB show i wanted to go to.

Awesome dude.

The concerts I would put on par with the very best Prince shows I've seen would be:

Bjork @ the House of Blues Chicago for the Homogenic tour.

Bjork on the island in Toronto for her Greatest Hits tour.

PJ Harvey/Tricky @ St. Andrew's Hall in '95.

David Bowie @ Roseland Ballroom when he performed all of Low and Heathen.

David Bowie @ The Chance in Poughkeepsie for the Reality warm-up gig.

Tori Amos @ U of M in '94.

Madonna for the Drowned World taping in Detroit.

The Cure for the Dream Tour and last summer for Curiosa.

well, sort of...

i told them that the show was scheduled for 1am and by 3am prince still had not come out. they then continued the story for me by saying something along the lines of "yeah, and when he did it wasn't even him," or something to that degree. i told them that as we were leaving we finally heard an actual prince song and went to go back in - we weren't out of the building, mind you, just outside of the mainroom with the stage - but their wonderful security team told us we couldn't go back in. they said there was no re-entry even though we weren't even outside of the building, lol. anyway, cutting to the chase, i told them that the show was horrendous and not as advertised, the staff was awful, and i didn't feel as though i should have paid for that experience. the manager told me that many people complained and that he wasn't giving any refunds or credits but if i kept it between us he would give me two comp tickets to any show i want.

i think i'm going to see iron and wine with the free tickets now.

I have to say it's hard to top P... Sometimes it's the whole experience that makes it all better. Musician wise...he takes the cake, the knife and the box...however, I have seen some really really good shows other than P. One thing that P has a hard time with is the set list/intimacy...most often it's hit driven and a huge show...or a really crowded after show. So I have to say other acts have that going a little bit better. Sometimes rarity counts too.

On par with P...

Creatures (first one in 88 and this last one in 04...both amazing) - The live drum Energy, Set list, Intamacy, has made the offerings by Siouxsie Sioux very special indeed.

Nitzer Ebb - Pure energy. These guys start the show and never let you go. Set lists are always good too.

Pink Floyd - For an arena tour (outdoors) this one was great. It was their last time they toured. Music and singing were great. Was with al my friends too.

Erasure Wild Tour - Snuck up to the 13th row...which is always a good time. That stage changed every 3 songs. Robotic flowers, flying bumble bees and Andy at top form...made this a very enjoyable concert.

Laurie Anderson - Nerve Bible/Bright Red tour. Her last "music" tour. All of it Amazing and intamite

Dead Can Dance - Rarely tour. Amazing.

Pet Shop Boys - Rarely tour. Got to see one of my favorites.

Christian Zombie Vampires

ah, not true! her tour in 2001 was an all-music tour. it was in support of the 'life on a string' album, and it was a kind of 'greatest hits' tour that she performed with a band. there's a really nice two-disc live album from this tour you can find easily on amazon.com or at your local wrecka stow.

i wish i could have seen the tour you saw, though. 'bright red' is a favorite laurie album of mine.

doh! Ack! I'm not sure that got up here. Probably did. I saw Moby Dick...that was ok. Yes I have the Live In NY...she was in Chi-town 9/11. I forgot about that one...as an actual tour.

The Bright Red tour whad all the gizmos (tape bow violin, lipstick micro phone, and body suit boombox)...not sure if the one for Life on a string did.

nah. the 2001 tour was very stripped down. no slide show, no body suit boombox, no ski masks lol - just laurie and her band, with her on violin and keyboards and vocals.

One of my other favorite concerts ever has to be THE B52's at the FILLMORE in San Francisco in 1992? Around there. OH MY GOD. I thought the whole place was going to cave in. INCREDIBLE.

Totally. I've only been to one Madonna show and one Prince show, and the Madonna show definatly topped the Prince show for me.
Throught the Madonna show everyone, even in the stands were up and dancing throughout the whole show.
The prince one, the odd person would stand but the atmosphere was less then thrilling. It was the Musicology show, so i assume her past tours must have been better.

Toronto.....
Some people stood, but not enough that made me comfortable standing and block the family sitting behind me's view.

The minute Madonna arrived on her platform the whole stadium rose to their feet and stayed there the whole night.

Crowd participation adds to the excitment IMO.

the couple behind me at the pond sat down after Hollywood and yelled at my roommate and i to sit down. we figured we shelled out some 700$ between the two of us to be on the floor no way in hell were we going to sit down and not see the Idol herself.
