There were a lot of big instrumental hits in the late 1950s-early 1960s . A few stars of that ers who were known for instrumentals were Lonnie Mack, Link Wray, The Tornados, Duane Eddy, and of course, Booker T & the MGs.
Rhino Records has an excellent 5 CD set covering Instrumental Hits. Each volume covers a seperate decade or style, so there's volumes for the 50s, 60s, 70s, Soul Music, and Surf Music. Also, ACE Records from England has an Instrumental series, which also had 4 or 5 volumes. This series concentrates on the 1950s and 1960s heyday of Instrumental Top 40 Hits #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Was that considered a hit? I don't think it was. It was a big hit in England around the time of it's release.Probably one of the biggest hits the Peter Green group had...a strange one tho, as they were mostly a blues band... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

I'm wondering if 'Trans Europe Express' by Kraftwerk counts... That was a great one which led to the Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock". The 12 Inch of "Planet Rock" had a vocal side but the 9 minute instrumental side was the most popular down here. Andy is a four letter word.

"Why" and "Spare Me a Little" are my favorites pre Lindsey/Stevie. Let the rain come down...17 days....
