Instrumental songs that were HITS? I'm listening to the most random song right now...it's the theme to MIAMI VICE which ended up being a hit in the 80s.
Anyway I'm trying to think of ther instrumental songs that were actually radio hits: "St. Elmos Fire" movie theme - David Foster "Beverly Hills Cop" theme What else? Let the rain come down...17 days....

Can't believe I didn't think of some of these!!
Herb Alpert--with the Tijuana Brass and later on his own--scored many hits over 25 years with songs that were purely instrumental or had minimal singing/lyrics, from "The Lonely Bull" in 1962 to "Keep Your Eye on Me" in 1987. "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

I was going to start a similar post about instumentals.
I was thinking a few days ago about how instrumentals were pretty popular in the 70's and 80's. There were many that charted. I don't think it's possible now considering the sad state of music. Does anyone know the last time an instrumental hit the charts? btw...is Moments in Love considered an instrumental since there is some singing in the song?

Shit, you beat me to it. I've been on a Herb Alpert binge lately and that's the first artist to come to mind when I saw this thread.
