David Bowie - The Collection Yet another thrown together compilation of Bowie's work. But this one is an oddball. None of the songs were hits really. Mostly just great album tracks, rare singles and fan favorites. But I really LOVE almost all these songs. It's actually got me thinking about the way I would put together a Bowie box set and how I would've tweaked the "Sound and Vision" Anthology had I put it together. I'll post my results soon...
Here's what's on it. 1. Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed 2. The Width of a Circle 3. Andy Warhol 4. Soul Love 5. Cracked Actor 6. Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing reprise 7. Somebody Up There Likes Me 8. Word On A Wing 9. Always Crashing In The Same Car 10. Beauty And The Beast 11. Repetition 12. Teenage Wildlife

I think I heard about this being a selection of songs Bowie (or prehaps someone else) picked because they weren't necssarily hits. I've seen it online and it's a very cheap import. Less than $10 at CdUniverse! [Edited 3/21/05 18:38pm]

Actually a pretty neat mix...
but you're right to ask: why release a collection of relatively obscure album tracks? All the fans will have them already, the casuals won't have any interest. Weird.

this reminds me of the weird import compos i used to buy for five or six bucks a pop way back when i was first getting into bowie - stuff like 'fashion' and 'golden years', that was mostly a collection of stuff he did between 'station to station' and 'scary monsters'. i guess these quickie compos were meant to make a fast buck off his 'let's dance' fame or something, i dunno, but they were good primers for some of his more experimental work and i couldn't get enough of the ones i owned, at least until i was used to the albums the songs were taken from.
i saw blurbs on this CD on bowienet, and while i really do like the tracklist, it isn't anything i can't throw together on a CD-R for myself, and since i spend way too much on that geezer as it is, i think i might pass on this one. gangstafam, i'd love to see what kind of track list you'd make...every year, or at least when there's a new bowie album out, i'll make someone my own personalized 'sound+vision' bowie box and share it as a gift...everyone who knows me well has one, and just like francis L's music, they're all different, ya know.

truly bizarre. almost as much of a head-scratcher as that comp. someone made a few months ago and posted here, with about 6 tracks from pin-ups, and 1 post pin-ups track, just because they wanted to get 25 songs on the disc, or something. I think what would make this collection worthwhile is if they included some rare versions of these songs. Stuff like the vinyl only edit of "Word On A Wing", "Andy Warhol" with the extended intro, the alternate version of "Somebody Up There Likes Me", shit like that. But as it is, I have no idea why they selected the tracks they did other than going for one song from each of his classic albums that wasn't a hit.

i did a Bowie Anthology collection a couple years back - there are perfect divisions in his career.
Disc One - thru Diamond Dogs and Pinups Disc Two - Young Americans thru Scary Monsters Disc Three - Cat People thru BTWN Disc Four - the modern age

Neat-o! Bowie is fabulous. I am really grooving to his stuff circa Black Tie, White Noise. I love jazz, and his work during this time was infused with a lot of saxophone (tracks like "Looking For Lester" & "The Wedding") - one of the sexiest instruments on earth!

I know. That was the album that got me into him. Bring back the sax Dave!
