MJ/JJ--"Scream" song/video--over-rated or under-valued?

with all the broo-haa-haa surrounding this video and song, i was expectting something alittle more daring than 2001 A Space Odyssey and MJ playing handball with some pottery. The dancing was quick you missed it if you blinked...If i remember correctly the song debuted very high on Billboard, then plummeted..anybody remember?

I loved this song when it first came out, 1996(i think), it got like major airplay if i remember correctly it debuted at no.5 on the hot 100 but started to slip after that. a big shocker really since "History' was Micheal's Big comeback, anyway i always thought that this song(and the video) was highly under valued. it seemed to me like Micheal was tryingto get back at the critics and the industry with all the tremendous pressure put on him. added to that it was his big collaboration with janet(who rocked in the video!)and u had a big success just waiting to happen, too bad it didn't turn out that way sad . I thought the dance scenes were great and really cool and at the time all the space stuff with MJ spinning and playing cyber tennis(or whatevr the hell that game was) looked darn Impressive.

n.b this was also the first time i heard Mj curse "... stop pressuring me, stop Fucking with me, u make me wanna scream...." first time i heard that i was like eek eek eek did Micheal just say that?

Yeah last I checked and that was about a few months ago. As for the song and video. The video didn't really do anything for me, but the song is dope.

Uh, dude, the song went to #5 and was a huge hit around the world (#3 UK). Better than most megastar pairings....

it would have been nice to see them perform the song together at least once. like let's say the MJ 30th aniversy thingy.

over-blown.

but on the other hand, i wonder where all the money went (unless it was mostly director's fees for mr. romanek), because for as much as it reportedly cost, you really don't see the money on the screen, like you do for the other supposedly "most expensive videos ever made" like Black Or White or Bedtime Story.

#5 for the debut single from an MJ album (at that time), and a pairing the pop music world had been anticipating for a decade is actually pretty disappointing. especially considering the amount of promotion put into it, the fact that MJ was topic A at the time, and that Janet was more white-hot as a celebrity and an artist than any time previously.

Well, I am not crazy about that video, I like more simple stuff like Stranger in Moscow or Smooth criminal - I don´t like too many special effects. But yeah, it´s ok. I like to see him and Janet together - fooling around - it´s fun.

Along with having Thriller voted as THE BEST video of all-time,

Michael also has Scream as rank THE MOST EXPENSIVE video of all-time.

I love the dance routine of Michael & Janet (BTW, Michael is a split second fast than baby sister!).

But I HATED the fact that Janet looked ugly with all that make-up on!

As for the song itself, this was the most overproduce song ever by Michael, Janet, Jimmy Jam, or Terry Lewis.
neutral

I love the remix better (Scream Louder). cool

Read: special effects cost millions of USA dollars.

Was never crazy about the song but liked the video. Mark Romanek with MJ and JJ--I had high hopes. It was a little less than what I expected but I was just happy to see the adult Michael and Janet interacting with one another for a change. The dancing could have been SICK but seemed deliberately kept to a minimum. Always wished Michael had different hair in. Something new and different. As for Janet... one of her best looks evah.

nothing simple at all about Smooth Criminal lol

its the most stylish, best choreography, best dressed, set, sound, dam its the best video ever!! how can that be simple... although the low point i do always cringe when Mj shots this guy and he breaks through the walls and makes a hole in the shape of his body, very cheesy it was bad then, worse now....

As for SCREAM i love it, i didnt think much the first time, but it truly adds the song more value, it had to be overblown its got janet in it, and the song is called SCREAM after all, the video just screams at you..

Impressed

I thought the video was hype during its initial run in the mid-90s. It's a classic '90s video (and a classic one, in general). It wasn't the illest thing in the world, but it rocked. So, I feel it's valued.

This 1995 clip is a classic. It had several copy cats throughout the rest of the 90s. It was another MJ short film EVENT. I remember the day when it debuted. John Norris did a "behind the scenes" special before the video aired on MTV. This thing costed like $7 million to make. There was more morphing than a Star Wars movie. Awesome video! biggrin

The dance sequence was short but UNFORGETTABLE!

The first time I saw Scream video I WENT NUTS!! at the time i was like 13 so the song I didnt really get in2. But growing up...the song got better, better and better (maybe cuz the music scene started to get more midtempo up the hill) and now I LOVE Scream and I dont think it should be left out of any MJ conversation. Everytime I see the video, I just cant stop it. How can you just turn it from Janet and Michael dancing together on screen?

Okay song. Really great video. This was the first time I thought to myself that Janet had surpassed her brother on the dance side. I know that she has youth on her side but I have always preferred to watch her dance.

Musically, Scream sounds like the spawn of If and Rhythm Nation. I like the video (Janet looks HOT), but I don't think it's Janet or Michael's best, or even Romanek's best video from that year. I'm still amazed that it cost 7 million dollars to make, and that they needed two choreographers (not to mention two of the most famous dancers) to come up with that dance. I've always thought that they could've done much better.

My favorite scene:

I'm gonna have to agree with adoreme. I've always preferred Janet to Michael, dance-wise. He might be a technically better dancer, but I'll take Janet anyday.

hmm hmm

just kidding lol

Sheer pleasure in watching another dance is subjective, and by the early 90’s mike got to the point of dizzying for some. If anything Janet’s ability is a credit to her brother.

Breaking Locking Popping Tap, freestyle…. Mike can do/did it all and hold his own with Taco, Shrimp, Shabadoo, anyone of the Boogaloos (who were in most of his videos and some on tour), Soul Train or Solid Gold dancers. Not to mention get major props from Sammy, Fred and Gene. I’ve never seen anyone spin with his speed, tightness and number of revolutions. Janet would get her ass tore up in a battle between anyone of these guys back in the day.

Janet was a step ahead in the scream vid though. Mike with a good back could still tear up any pop star, like the way he tore up usher on the 30th concert.

Omarion is probably the best out there now.

I know it's practically heresy here to say that MJ ain't the greatest but my personal opinion is that JJ puts on a much better show. Her theatricality in concert way surpasses her brother. Maybe she learnt it all from him, who knows?
