Level 42 ...was listening to them a lot lately, so I just decided to throw some photos up...
...This Jazz/Pop/Funk/Rock/Whatever Else - band was formed by dynamic bassist Mark King, keyboardist Mike Lindup, drummer Phil Gould and guitarist Boon Gould, and produced and assisted on additional keyboards by African keyboardist Wally Badarou. (Earth Wind, and Fire members Verdine White and Larry Dunn produced their third album, Standing In The Light in 1983); Over time, the line-up would include drummer Gary Husband, the late guitarist Alan Murphy and, in '91, guitar phenom Allan Holdsworth...

I always loved their big hit "Something About You". Didn't some guy change his name to the band's name AND every album, single, whatever they released? I remember seeing it on MTV News and I still remember that to this day. | |

Also, I agree with the others that their most tight album thus far was World Machine which I still have on Wax and play from time to time. It is a shame that they didn't blow up as much like Duran Duran did in the States. I guess it was probably b/c they were too funky and jazzy. We gotta face the fact that my boy Mark is a badass bassist and Wally Bardarou production on their albums is always on point. I was lucky enough to catch them at a small club in DC, back in '86...that was a Slammin' show....and yeah, Mark King is a bad boy on the Bass...
....growing up,I was always in awe of bassists like Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, and Bootsy, but it was actually Mark King (and also Mark Adams of Slave) that made me say, "Alright, that does it , I'ma go get me a Bass! they're havin' way too much fun!",

We are a covers band, all rock stuff really, but he is the BIGGEST Level 42 fan. Believe it or not, he even plays like Mark King .He plays the instrumental track called, I think , Mr Pink, and boy... I have been playing guitar for 16 years and watching this guy just makes me wonder why I even bother...  And as for Mark King himself, I ain't a big fan of the band or the style of music, but what a phenomenally gifted musician

Oddly enough , "Something About You" was the song that took the longest time to grow on me --I don't know why, exactly...strange, beacause that was everyone else's favorite! But yeah, I would always skip over that track and groove on the rest of the album, ....I like it now, though...." The 70's or the 80's???? 70's Kool ....though actually, it might be more like Brothers Johnson and the Headhunters meets Tears for Fears... They started out as Jazz/Funk, with progressive rock thrown in--- they became more pop oriented in the mid-eighties(especially on Running in the Family) and towards the mid-nineties, began to shift back towards toward Pop/Funk with Progressive rock overtones.....I think I just confused everyone, myself included, ....

My question is, why haven't they toured the U.S. for as long as their reunion has been going on?
For real, yo. Since the reunion in 2002 Level 42 hasn't even set foot on U.S. soil. I mean, surely there are still many fans in the U.S. who desire to hear some great stuff from these lads. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE. | |
