Question About Jimi Hendrix Albums

I never was really into Jimi Hendrix and had never heard of him until everyone was comparing Prince to him back in 1984. At that time, I bought an album called "High, Live, and Dirty" which is on red vinyl. At the time, I didn't care for it. I had only bought it to see if resembled Prince and I didn't hear any resemlance.

Over the years, my tastes have broadened and I pulled the album out again in the mid 1990s and began to acquire a taste for it. I went to the record store and bought a greatest hits type collection called "The Ultimate Experience". I really enjoyed a lot of the tracks on there so now I would like to start exploring the albums in their entirity.

Whenever I browse the Jimi Hendrix section in the record store, I see albums like "Electric Ladyland" but the CDs will contain almost 20 tracks. Now I know good and damn well that artists did not make albums with that many tracks in the 1960s. From the tracklistings, these albums have some of the same tracks on each one. They seem more like greatest hits collections with original album titles as the title of the CD. I'm cool with bonus tracks, or live versions at the end of the CD, but I want to hear the original albums, in their entirity, as they were originally released. Do these exist on CD or am I going to have to look for vinyl?

Jimi only released 5 albums in his lifetime:
1. Are You Experienced?
2. Axis, Bold As Love
3. Electric Ladyland (It was a double album)
4. Band Of Gypsies
5. Smash Hits (Not Jimi's idea, something the label wanted to do, the more things change, the more they stay the same-huh?)
I would also highly recommend:
First Rays Of The New Rising Sun (the best of the later albums on one convienant cd.)
If you wanna get higher, ya gotta get DEEP!

VA,

I believe High, Live and Dirty is something that has popped up under a couple of names (Jam, Sky High) and is a live recording of an impromtu jam at Steve Paul's Scene in NYC that included a drunken Jim Morrison.
This topic was discussed within another thread not too long ago. (can't find it of course)

If i'm correct, the tracks should run something like:

Red House
Woke Up This Morning And You Find Yourself Dead
Bleeding Heart
Morrison's Lament
Tomorrow Never Knows
Uranus Rock
Outside Woman Blues
Sunshine Of Your Love

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Sad to hear that this was your first dose of Hendrix.
The main albums to focus on are...

I know i'll get some flack about this one, but historically, this would be next...

...The Cry Of Love

But since you'll probably never find this on CD anyway, your alternative would be...

...First Rays of the New Rising Sun

Regarding the number of tracks you finding on the CD reissues, in most cases, this is due to the fact that the original albums had different track sequences depending on whether it was the U.S. or U.K. release. What's happening on the CDs is that they're combining both releases so that you have all the album tracks on one CD (actually a good thing).

Hope this helps.

Actually I love the album now. At the time, in 1984, I was disappointed because I was expecting to hear a "Prince sounding" record...synths and thangs, lol (the press was always comparing the two at that time).

Anyway, the album, "High, Live, 'N Dirty" has a 1981 copyright and was released on AFE Audiofidelity Records from London. This is a little bit of the narrative on the back cover:

Jimi got his start in the mid-60's, playing the club scene in New York's Greenwich Village. It was here that he developed his incredible guitar style, doing things with electronic fuzz, feedback, and high volume that no guitarist has been able to since duplicate. And it was here in New York that this very rare club recording was made, on an evening when Hendrix was high and loose and his group was in a particularly raucous mood.

As Hendrix gets into the set you will hear him as few other people ever have! Even his Monterey appearance does not match this record's raunchy, raw intensity and explicit language. The group slashes the listener with provacative talk and high energy playing. In fact, you may find this LP downright shocking! But if you like your Hendrix high, live 'n dirty, then this is your kind of album!

The tracks are:

Side A:

F.H.I.T.A. (Short of "Fuck Her In The Ass")
No! No!
In The Morning

Side B:

Jimi's Blues
Peoples, Peoples

hmmm Well you learn something new everyday.

Is this the cover?

F.H.I.T.A. must be the jam with a drunken Jim Morrison.

These "Scene Jams", with alternate track sequences, have been released in various incarnations:

I've got to say his music is awesome. I got into Hendrix over the last couple of months and i've got about 30 albums. Most are concerts downloaded and there is plenty more if you search.

Yeah, when Purple Rain was released, I was hip to a lot of kids that ran out and got stuff by Hendrix or asked me to play them things by Hendrix, just cuz P bit off of Jimi's imagery soooo hard. I mean, just from the tilte alone, a lot of kids had at least heard Jimi's "Purple Haze" and knew what Jimi looked like. So, they spotted the bite. I had tons of posters on my wall of Jimi, and there were a few Hendrix posters that even the kids that weren't hip to Jimi, they would say "wow, he looks like Prince". I would have to correct them "No, Prince looks like Jimi." I would play them certain Hendrix songs that I knew P had bit from in his own material, and they would be amazed. A lot of kids my age at that time, (early 80's) thought P was the most original cat that ever walked this earth. When I played and showed them things from not just Jimi, but Sly and countless others, they would be shocked. So nah, you weren't going to hear any keyboards or the "minni sound" on Jimi's albums.

Throw away The Ultimate Experience and purchase these. They are all you need from now on:

Are You Experienced?
Axis: Bold As Love
Electric Ladyland
First Rays Of The New Rising Sun

If you have a lot of dough left over I suggest these others:

Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set (the purple velvet one)
Band Of Gypsys
Live At Fillmore
Live At Woodstock
Live At Monterey
BBC Sessions
South Saturn Delta

Anything on the Dolly Dagger label (subsidary of Experience Hendrix).

NOTE: ONLY PURCHASE "EXPERIENCE HENDRIX" LABEL ALBUMS. ALL OTHERS ARE INFERIOR.

Hendrix is quite simply, the man, end of story. He's routinely considered the greatest guitar player in rock history, and among the greatest guitar players of all time in any genre, he was an outstanding composer, lyricist and studio experimenter and a highly underrated singer too. His three studio albums rank beside anything the Beatles, the Stones or anybody ever did as far as I'm concerned and his live performances are absolutely mindblowing.
